The Roadmap of Collaboration Skills from Programmed Teaching to E-learning

Nataliia Morze , Rusudan Makhachashvili , Eugenia Smyrnova-Trybulska

Published: 01-02-2016 | Abstract | pp. 41-56

The article presents the comparative analysis of the basic principles of pro-grammed teaching, and constructivism for their subsequent use in creating open learning didactics in view of the collaborative approach and collaboration-oriented activities. What is investigated is the fact that the same idea forms the basis of the two paradigms (constructivism and personal learning): the humanistic character of education, taking individual characteristics into account, the activity-based approach, and the collaborative activity of a student. The assumptions about increasing the efficiency of the educational process, based on the ideas of integrative unity of these concepts, are justified. Further development of the personally-oriented approach in terms of such interconnected approaches as e-learning, connectionism, and combined learning is discovered. Simultaneously, programmed teaching – also experiencing its renaissance – can be used effec-tively and purposefully in educational collaboration in connection with other paradigms.

English Teachers’ Digital Competences in a Post-COVID Classroom: A Case Study

Marzena Wysocka-Narewska

Published: 13-12-2024 | Abstract | pp. 1-34

The article addresses the issue of digital competences observed among English teachers in the context of the post-Covid classroom covered by the time frame from September 2022 to 2023. In order to check the level of teachers’ professional digital competences, also known as TPDC, who, according to the current state of research showed a complete lack of such skills in the first period of the pandemic, the retrospective interview was conducted. Next, in September 2022, when the first school year without any Covid-19 restriction began, the teachers underwent a detailed analysis of their competences via a questionnaire based on the European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu), allowing them to self-mark (un)used digital skills during language lessons. Additionally, the teachers’ state of knowledge and skills from this period was compared with their competences at a later stage, in September 2023, to check the impact of such factors as time, previous experience in using the skills and trainings completed on teachers’ functioning in the classroom. The study was composed of four teachers representing two primary schools in Poland. It turned out that the respondents’ knowledge and use of modern technologies was negligible in the first period of the pandemic, as assumed, while their digital competences acquired later on were a matter of time and result of the courses attended. As the study participants reflected different levels of skills, distributed unevenly over time, three different trends in teachers’ (non)development of the above-mentioned competences were outlined. In addition, the profiles of teachers participating in the study were constructed in line with the lists of determinants of teachers’ digital proficiency proposed by the European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu). Following the research findings, it is not teachers’ age, seniority or degree of professional promotion at school that influences their digital skills, but rather their basic knowledge, education and additional functions performed in an institution that immediately impacts the level of modern technology competences. It is recommended to expand the research to measure the competences in question on a larger research sample, as well as look at the very classroom situation from the point of view of real skills (un)used by teachers during language instructions

The Impact of Support for Language Development in Online Classes at Gdansk University of Technology During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Iwona Mokwa-Tarnowska , Viviana Tarnowska

Published: 25-06-2022 | Abstract | pp. 1-24

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant disruption to education. To adapt to new conditions, academics immediately had to restructure their teaching programmes. Not all of them, however, had sufficient skills to be able to deliver effective online classes. Neither did the less qualified have enough time to increase their competencies by getting pre-emptive support coming from peers and technical staff, nor did they have an opportunity to self-direct their training. Yet, to achieve the best effect, to develop an e-learning environment in which they could deliver high-quality teaching that would meet various language needs of their students, they needed general and specific support mechanisms. The former relates to the technological aspect, that is the functionalities of available tools and the affordances they allow. The latter comes from the course structure, educational material designed to engage students in learning, teachers and fellow students. With strong support provided by certified peers, the English teachers at Gdansk University of Technology managed to engage their students in interactive, collaborative and active learning. The ideas shared in the paper are supported by qualitative and quantitative research conducted in 2020 and 2021.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the focus of education on creativity
achieved by the use of coding (“code to learn”), in view of modern pedagogical
theories. Social interactions between young creators are an important factor. The
paper describes an initial stage of the research on the phenomenon of the remix
of simple computer games created by the community of users in the Scratch
environment. It presents selected problems of young creators connected to sharing
their own work with other community members: authorship acknowledgement,
formal acknowledgement for the first author placed on derived products (games),
reactions of the first author to the creative development of their ideas or influence
of school grades on the will to share the project. There will be further research
on the achievements of the same group of students aged 15 to 16 after a series of
lessons concerning creating computer games in the Scratch environment.

The Interactive Board – an Indispensable Device in Upper Secondary Education

Natalia Ruman , Agata Pokładnik

Published: 29-12-2020 | Abstract | pp. 1-17

In the face of dynamic social transformations and the lives of modern children and young people, the school should use modern educational technologies to a greater extent than ever before. One of the great opportunities to increase the attractiveness of the school for students is to use, for example, an interactive board that offers greater opportunities for interactive lessons. Children and young people are living in the world of multimedia, which have taught them to demand surprises and new ways of presenting information at an ever faster pace; therefore, they have different expectations from their teachers than previous generations. To use modern technologies in lessons, it is necessary to prepare and motivate teachers. The article presents the educational values of this type of teaching aid, and explores their use by teachers in upper secondary school.

Student’s Well-Being in the E-School Environment: Selected Research Results

Agnieszka Buczak , Izabella Maria Łukasik

Published: 31-12-2021 | Abstract | pp. 1-20

The aim of the study was to identify the areas most sensitive to the well-being of students in the e-school environment. The researchers’ interest in the field of education most often relates to students’ school achievements. It seems reasonable to look at the reality of school from the perspective of the well-being of adolescents. The threat of a pandemic and the transition to remote learning have created unique conditions for understanding student problems. In reference to Allardt’s concept, four categories of well-being were distinguished 1) school conditions, 2) interpersonal relationships, 3) means of self-fulfillment, and 4) overall health condition.
The study was conducted online, but through schools, among grades 7 and 8, and the first grade of secondary school students (N = 360). The principal component analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the tool have been developed. The criterion validity was determined on the basis of the relationship between the questionnaire and other tests that measure similar problems. Rosenberg’s Self-Assessment Scale and the KIDSCREEN-10 Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire for Children were used.
The Student’s Well-being in the E-school Environment: A Questionnaire is sufficiently reliable and valid. The distribution of low, average and high results in the sub-scales was more or less even. Low scores in the first sub-scale were reported by every fourth student, in the second and third sub-scale by every third student. The scale can be used to recognise the well-being of students learning in a remote or hybrid system. Well-being translates into functioning in many areas of life activity.

Published: 07-06-2024 | Abstract | pp. 1-26

This paper addresses the issue of modern didactics and student motivation for self-learning as well as tackling significant practical challenges. In technical and STEAM education, achieving high levels of motivation is particularly important, as students often become overwhelmed by the vast amount of information and opportunities which lead to diminished interest. At the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Silesia in Katowice, a Hackathon – a 24-hour programming marathon – was organized to enhance student engagement. During this event, students confronted a critical problem in modern societye: emotion recognition. The goal was to develop solutions and help for fostering emotion recognition skills in young people with real-world implementation potential. Additionally, students tested their abilities under time pressure, honed their group work competencies, and faced real-time problem-solving scenarios. This paper presents an evaluation of the event’s impact and analyzes the results of a post-event survey, providing feedback to improve the quality of future Hackathons. The main research questions we posed during the research were: RQ1: At what level of quality was the Hackathon event organized? Whether students were well informed and felt cared for during this event? RQ2: What aspects and properties motivate students most to take part in events organized at the university like Hackathon? RQ3: What competencies, knowledge and skills were developed by participants in the Hackathon? RQ4: Do students consider issues related to recognizing emotions important and the created applications possible to use in practice? In this paper, we answer these questions using statistical analysis as well as simple machine learning models.

Perception of Information Security in the Process of Distance Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Example of University Teachers’ Experiences

Agnieszka Kubacka , Daniel Biały , Radosław Gołąb

Published: 31-12-2021 | Abstract | pp. 1-18

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected every area of our lives. One of them was education, which had to undergo a huge transformation in a very short time. Overnight, the computer replaced the blackboard and became the only tool of communication between a student and a teacher. Teachers had to completely change the tools used in the teaching process and enter a completely new and, for many of them completely unknown, working environment. Online learning has replaced traditional teaching. A computer with Internet access has become a basic work tool for people who have so far used it mainly for recreational purposes. Teachers were thrown in at the deep end, for most of themit was the first time they had encountered platforms for remote communication.
As the workspace has changed, learners and teachers have begun to move much more frequently into the world of the Internet, which harbors many dangers of which quite a few people were previously unaware. For this reason, the authors decided to investigate the problem of information security in e-learning. This paper attempts to collect the experiences and assess the awareness of university teachers about information security threats while teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research results presented in this paper showed that the level of awareness of the risks, that may affect academic teachers in the distance learning process, is very low. Additionally, no appropriate procedures for safe distance learning have been developed. The communication security area was practically completely overlooked during the COVID-19 educational  revolution.

Lisa-Marie Langesee , Nelli Ukhova

Published: 27-06-2023 | Abstract | pp. 1-25

Research on digital collaboration scenarios in Higher Education (HE) is characterized by various approaches that often define the acquisition and development of global skills as learning goals. Virtual Collaborative Learning (VCL) in HE represents one approach to facilitating students’ global skills. Depending on the use case, these learning arrangements can include case study-based group learning under e-tutorial supervision. This paper focuses on the perspective of e-tutors – specially qualified student assistants – and their competence development during the summer semester of 2022. Based on previous research findings, a tandem setting was chosen for their competence development. This paper mainly compares expectations and experiences regarding the competence improvement of e-tutors in a multinational tandem. These expectations and experiences were queried through two quantitative questionnaires utilizing 5-point Likert scales and one short follow-up questionnaire after the finalization of VCL. In general, the positive expectations of the e-tutors were fulfilled, but not to a similar extent for each competence category. Especially the development of social and pedagogical competencies was positive, whereas the development of intercultural competencies was challenging. Several recommendations for action were derived, which impact further e-tutor training.

The partial goal of the research study was to find out whether there is a difference between the views of Czech and Polish teachers on the introduction of the use of artificial intelligence in schools. To achieve the research goal, we decided to use a qualitative research. The semi-structured interview method was used with Czech and Polish primary and secondary school teachers. As part of the research, it was found that Czech teachers fear the advent of artificial intelligence and its use in education, especially that students will “abuse” AI to cheat and plagiarize. This phenomenon was not detected among Polish teachers. They rather perceived artificial intelligence as a help for teachers; respondents from the ranks of Polish teachers already had their first experience with the use of artificial intelligence. Among Czech teachers, there are also those who work with chatbots and perceive them as a tool that helps them reduce their workload and make their work more efficient. Most Czech teachers see the introduction of artificial intelligence in schools as inevitable and realize that their task is to teach pupils to use AI effectively. Also, Polish teachers believe that with the advent of artificial intelligence, the role of the teacher is changing; the teacher is expected to be a guide for the student to learn about the effective use of artificial intelligence. Teachers, both Czech and Polish, are also aware that the teaching system will also have to change with the arrival of AI in schools. Pupils will need to be assigned different types of tasks than before, i.e., ones that AI will not create for them.

The researchers characterized the educational program "Social successfulness", in particular, determined its target orientations and key competencies of teenagers, highlighted the gamification tools necessary for the implementation of the program, found out that the mixed format is the optimal format for its implementation, as it combines the advantages of offline and online learning and can be effective in conditions of increased danger associated with martial law. The article carried out a pedagogical reflection and found out that, according to the results of the blitz survey, teenagers verbalize the two most common portraits of a socially successful personality (based on external indicators of success and personal qualities), according to the results of the questionnaire, the majority of respondents positively perceived game tools and recognized her own activity during training with the use of gamification as productive. The issue of using gamification tools for children of different ages, including those with special educational needs, and the creation of an algorithm for using gamification elements in various educational institutions require further research.

Five Theses on (Dis)Comfort in the Educational Cultures of Digitality

Theo Hug

Published: 31-12-2021 | Abstract | pp. 1-22

In many current discussions, digitalization functions as a dazzling leitmotif not only for technological, social and cultural transformation processes in general, but also for current social reproduction problems and upheavals in the field of education in particular. On the one hand, there is a widespread uneasiness in educational cultures of digitality; on the other hand, the promises of the future in learning technology are also promoting tendencies of ease for some groups. Based on a broader perspective that goes beyond a Freudian understanding of discomfort in culture, this article puts forward five trenchant theses for discussion, all of which mark fault lines of (dis)comfort in the educational cultures of digitality.
