Selected risk factors in voice disorders and knowledge of vocal hygiene in primary school teachers. Preliminary report

Voice is a work instrument in many professions, especially in that of teaching. Teachers are prone to develop voice impairment that is likely to occur due to lack of practice in and familiarity with the voice production principles and occupational hygiene. In spite of growing understanding and awareness of the need to use one’s voice properly, a significant share of vocal apparatus disorders include complaints resulting from excessive and inappropriate vocal strain. The following article aims at summarizing preliminary results of a study oriented towards assessment of teachers’ knowledge and practice in the field of vocal hygiene.

The impact of bilingualism on psychomotor development in preschool children in Poland: unlocking unique patterns of growth and interaction

This study examines bilingualism’s impact on preschoolers’ psychomotor development, considering parents’ age, upbringing, and environment. A total of 183 surveys were administered to 183 children (95 boys and 87 girls), including 101 bilinguals and 82 monolingual Polish speakers. The data were analyzed via STATISTICA 10.0. The results indicate that monolinguals achieve speech milestones faster. Both groups vocalize before saying the first sentence. The time when children say their first word and sentence is significantly affected by the week of pregnancy when the baby is born. This correlation was found only in bilingual children.

The paper constitutes a presentation of diagnosis and therapy in a child after a intrauterine spina bifida surgery with recognized hydrocephalus. The author discusses the character of the disorder, pathomechanism and its results on the development of the child. The therapeutic techniques are presented and analyzed which aim at improving breathing, phonation and voice production as well as at stimulating both cerebral hemispheres. The author presents the results of the therapy and the case study highlights the accuracy of chosen methods.

Assessment of the functioning of patients with dysphagia after total laryngectomy

The aim of the study was to evaluate the functioning of patients with swallowing disorders after total laryngectomy. The study initially included 20 patients who were more than 6 months after total laryngectomy, requiring videofluoroscopy (VFSS) due to reported dysphagia. The final group consisted of 10 people (8 men and 2 women). The examination procedure included conducting an interview, performing a full VFSS examination and completing the MDADI questionnaire by the patient. The most common problems found in the group were the lack of contact of the base of tongue with the posterior wall of the throat, disturbances in bolus formation and pumping movements of the tongue. The patients assessed their quality of life as low. The presence or absence of nasal food regurgitation significantly influenced the functioning of patients. Patients’ reports of swallowing disorders and problems with the production of voice and substitute speech are indications for further diagnosis (e.g. VFSS). The choice of an effective therapeutic method may improve the quality of life of these people.
