Traduction automatique des mots sémantiquement proches dans l’approche orientée objets

The paper refers to the specifics of the French-Polish automated translation. The author summarizes briefly the rules of creating electronic lexical databases in the context of the Object Oriented Approach. This particular approach, created for the purpose of translation, especially for automated translation, by Wiesław Banyś, offers a specific approach towards the language description with the help of object classes seen through their semantic relations. The purpose of this description is to determine correctly the meaning of the words and polysemic expressions of the source language in the translation into the target language. Therefore, the main question of the paper concerns the role of frames and/or scripts criterion in the process of the natural language words’ disambiguation for automated translation. By analysing the example of the French word collier the Author shows how it is possible to solve the problem of near synonyms in automated translation with the use of the above-mentioned criterion.

This paper deals with a short study of automatic translation and natural language processing in contemporary linguistics. The author presents the main reasons of their conception as well as their beginnings and expectations in the historical perspective. Also the difficulties in the domain of automatic translation like polysemy, ambiguity or choice of the formalisms appropriate to the description and the proposals of their resolution are focused on in the paper. In this context, the article examines the problem of word sense disambiguation according to the object oriented approach proposed by W. Banyś. The author seeks to demonstrate the differences in the choice of the linguistic means in French and Polish on the analyzed levels and the influence of occurrence in this description. The aim of this paper is also to indicate some possibilities to communicate our human linguistic abilities to the computer to ensure the correct machine translation.

The article is devoted to the problem of translation from French into Polish from the perspective of the object oriented approach proposed by Wiesław Banyś. The author takes into consideration some of the problems, both of theoretical and practical nature, which appear while working on the formation of contrastive lexical database for automatic translation of texts. While analyzing specific chosen examples which may cause different kinds of problems in the description, the author offers their interpretations in the target language in accordance with the adopted approach.

The article deals with issues related to the description of polysemic units for supervised automatic translation of texts from French to Polish based on the object-oriented method by W. Banyś (AOO). Applying to the description additional tools allowing for the disambiguation — frames, scripts and register analysis — the author focuses on presenting the complexity of the description of lexical units. It should be stressed that the decision to assign meanings of such words one or another equivalents in the target language is determined by the criterion of preference. Some of the meanings of the word are easy to describe in such a way that the program can make a correct translation into the target language with a high degree of probability. However, there are often such meanings whose description is much more complex. The closer the meanings of the disambiguated words in the original and target language and the more similar the communication situation in which they are used, the more difficult it is to clearly indicate the boundaries between the meanings. In such cases, there is a much greater range of preferential character of the translation, which we have to adopt The French noun conjunction (f), chosen for analysis, reflects this phenomenon very well.

La sémantique des adjectifs et les questions d’équivalence linguistique entre le français et le polonais

The purpose of this article is to approach the problem of the disambiguation of adjectives in the context of translation. On the basis of the French adjectives analyzed for the purpose of the present study, the author demonstrates that these items can have several equivalents in Polish.Such multiple possible interpretations pose a major problem for the description of polysemous items in lexicographical publications, as well as for automatic translation technology. The correspondences between adjectives are rarely bi-univocal in two languages and this study gives some insights into the possibilities of using these words in both the languages. To exactly pinpoint all the available senses of the analysed words and to find their equivalents, the author makes use of the object oriented approach. This kind of description allows us to select the best equivalent of a word in a target language and to make explicit the relations of equivalence between the two languages.

This article lays down the basis of an automatic system of interpretation and disambiguation of adjectives (in those noun groups made up of a noun and an adjective), in order to create a machine translation system from French into Polish. It concerns in particular the semantics of adjectives according to their relation with the nouns they describe. Our intention is in fact to describe and predict the semantic compatibility between a noun and an adjective, and more exactly, to formulate the conditions which allow a correct interpretation of the meaning of an adjective in a noun group. This approach results in an algorithm for the semantic interpretation of the meaning of an adjective in a noun group, and, with regards to the machine translation system, in the construction of a language-independent relational intermediary representation.

Différences dans la conceptualisation entre le français et le polonais selon l’approche orientée-objets

It is well known that languages differ in how they describe the same piece of reality. In this paper, the author examine that the categorization of some events does not proceed in identical way in French and in Polish. On the basis of two nouns of French language analysed as an example, according to the object-oriented method, the author shows that in some cases one item could have few equivalents in other language. The lexicographical description was illustrated with the results deriving from two exemplary nouns (storm, frost). The selection of linguistic equivalents depends on the context of units. It causes great problems for the translator above all for the automatic translation. To chose the proper equivalent, the translator has to analyse a number of uses of unit and understand the concept expressed by the expression.

On + voir dans la traduction polonaise

In her article Elżbieta Skibińska examined, on the example of three novels by Georges Simenon and their Polish translations, the possible interpretations and Polish renderings of the on + voir construction. Even such a limited linguistic corpus allowed the author to distinguish two ways of translating this construction: the first one, with the use of the predicate widać (one can see that...), retains the element of the visual perception; the second one, based on the use of a verb that can position an object in space, stać, leżeć, wisieć etc. (stand, lie, hang), eliminates the element of the visual perception. The outcome of the analysis made the author formulate the hypothesis that perceptional depiction of the presented events happens more often in French than in Polish, but this hypothesis ought to be verified on broader material.

Wiesław Banyś discussed the natural polysemy of the lexicon of natural languages, perceived as one of the major problems of the automatic translation. He also presented a solution for the problem of disambiguation of ambiguous expressions - it pivots on the object-oriented description, enriched with a transfer of various possible translations in a target language to the possible ambiguity of a source language. Finally, the author showed differences in the representations of the world in Polish and French, on the example of some Polish renderings of the French verb gagner.

Désambiguïser et traduire sortir en polonais dans le cadre d’une approche orientée objets

The aim of this study is to analyse some uses of the French verb sortir, which are particularly interesting in terms of translation. The examples of uses of this verb in French and their Polish translations, as well as the class of objects which is concerned are the main ideas of the study. The method of the study is based on object-oriented approach and the disambiguation by W. Banyś. First, the general concept of the object-oriented approach and the definition of the class of objects are proposed. Then the author classifies the verb sortir as a dynamic verb according to the classification by A. Borillo. Finally, the results of the analysis are presented in the syntactic-semantic schemes with the contexts found in different databases (dictionaries, Internet).

The present paper aims at presenting the results of the disambiguation procedure of the French polysemic verb remettre. Each meaning of the analysed word is illustrated with examples, associated with the Polish translation and properly formalized with the use of syntactic-semantic schemes (being one of the formats of the computational lexicographic description proposed in the object-oriented approach by Wiesław Banyś). Furthermore, in the second part of the article, the author examines the prefixed equivalents of remettre and tries to establish some semantic relations between the French and Polish prefixation process.

L’aspect accompli et la traduction du futur antérieur en polonais

The purpose of this article is to describe the means of translating the grammatical tense futur antérieur in the accompli aspect from French into Polish. The accompli aspect constitutes a trait which is characteristic for French compound tenses, but absent from Polish in any form which would indicate the completion of the process and the state resulting from it. The perfective aspect of the future tense does not allow to underscore the resulting state, therefore, the translator tries to express it by using other structures.
