Modernizm międzywojenny: Nałkowska i Krleža – metafora »niedobre miłości« literaturach polskiej i chorwackiej

Tea Rogić Musa

Data publikacji: 06-12-2021 | Abstrakt | s. 1-23

Bibliografia przekładów na język śląski w latach 2002—2018 / Bibliography of translations into the Silesian language in the years 2002—2018

Karolina Pospiszil

Data publikacji: 30-05-2019 | Abstrakt | s. 103-118

The bibliography includes translations into the Silesian language made both in the standard script as well as in the non-standard one. The starting point for translations into the contemporary Silesian may be dated back to 2002. Since then, there have been irregularly published, usually in the form of collections, translations of various literary genres (with a preponderance of poetic forms) from dozen or so world languages, such as: Greek, Latin, French, German, Polish, Mandarin Chinese, English, Welsh, Russian, or the Upper Sorbian. No single translation from Silesian into other language is included, since heretofore no such a translation has been made.

„A chłopaki w brecht” — komentarz do Bibliografii przekładów literatury polskiej w Czechach w 2018 roku

Joanna Derdowska

Data publikacji: 31-12-2020 | Abstrakt | s. 121-131

The bibliography of Polish literature translated into Czech in 2018 is characterized by a tendency to publish popular and commercially attractive titles: genre fiction and literature for children. The author is concerned with sample passages from Ziemowit Szczerek’s translations of prose published in the A2 literary magazine and discusses possible consequences for the target language of the euphemisation of slang and vulgarisms in the translation of gonzo journalism texts.

Obraz ojczyzny w polskich przekładach poezji Miloša Crnjanskiego

Małgorzata Filipek

Data publikacji: | Abstrakt

The image of a homeland in the Polish translations of Miloš Crnjanski’s poetry

The translations of poems by M. Crnjanski were published in Poland before World War II. Currently, the Polish reader known the volume entitled Lyrics of Ithaca and three poems: Stražilovo, Serbia and Lament over Belgrade. The leitmotif of his poetry is the return to the homeland (Lyrics of Ithaca) and longing for it (poems). In Crnjanski’s poetry the homeland is symbolized by toponyms, whiche are already exhibited in the titles. They present some elements of tradition, e. g. a reference to folk songs (heroes: Prince Marko, Miloš Obilić) and Orthodox religion (churches, icons). The transfer of local names and some elements of foreign culture expose the exotic feature of this territory. It is an example of the cultural barrier and difficulties with understanding cultural context. The poetry by Crnjanski refers to a foreign space (Jan Mayen, Libon, Spain, Tuscany) which is exotic, not only for the Polish reader, but also for readers of the original texts.

Key words: Miloš Crnjanski, poetry, homeland, translation, exotic

Przekłady literatury słoweńskiej w Czechach i w Polsce w latach 1990—2006 / The translation of the Slovene Literature in the Czech Republic and in Poland in 1990—2006

Tatjana Jamnik

Data publikacji: 01-01-2009 | Abstrakt

In this review od Czech and Polish translations of Slovene literature in the past 17 years, the author shows diversity and resemblance in the cultural image of Slovenia in the collective consciousness of the two nations. The chosen era of research falls into two distinct periods. In the first, before the year 2000, the translations lied solely on the shoulders of individual translators, members of the „old” generation. The second period is characterized with a great outburst of translated Slovene literature by the young generation of traslators. Trough analysis and comparison of translated books and translations published in journals and on the internet in the Czech Republic and Poland the author draws our attention to the discrepancy in the amount of translated publications. The article explores the possible reasons for these changes and differences in the field of Slovene translated literature in the two related countries.

Prometejskie zmagania

Barbara Bibik

Data publikacji: 15-12-2023 | Abstrakt | s. 1-28

Why to Retranslate: New Ukrainian Renderings of Polish Prose

The paper focuses on the issue of retranslation perceived as a significant aspect of contemporary practice of literary translation into Ukrainian, exemplified by the cases of the retranslation of short stories by Bruno Schulz and Tadeusz Konwicki’s Minor Apocalypse. The emergence of new translations within a short time encourages questions about the ambitions that drove translators and publishers to present new translations of the previously translated literary works, as well as about the strategies used by translators.

O destereotypizacji odczytań tekstu oryginału w przekładzie. Rozważania o słoweńskim tłumaczeniu kulinariów w Panu Tadeuszu

Anna Muszyńska-Vizintin

Data publikacji: | Abstrakt

Source text’s destereotypization of interpretations in the process of translations — some theses about the culinary art of Adam Mickiewicz’s Sir Thaddeuss in Rozka Štefan Slovenian translations

Adam Mickiewicz’s Sir Thaddeus, or the Last Lithuanian Foray — Polish national epic poem, written in the Romantic period — is a masterpiece, considered to be untranslatable. It contains and codifies certain “patterns of Polishness”: stereotypical depictions of everything that are typically Polish, and indivisibly connected with the Polish (cultural, historical, literary, political) context and environment.

In the article it is asserted that a number of terms and depictions, which, in a certain culture are considered as stereotypical, in a translation change their status: they are neither schematic nor obvious anymore (they lose their stereotypy). The process of “destereotypization” takes place mainly because of the transfer into another language and into another cultural context, and because of the receiver’s (reader’s) different cultural education, who interprets the text from a completely different, new point of view.

Key words: „Polishness”, untranslatable, typical dishes (culinary), intercultural communication, interpretation, destereotypization, cultural context.

Przekład na peryferiach kanonu literackiego i normy językowej: ukraińska wersja Lubiewa Michała Witkowskiego

Andrij Saweneć

Data publikacji: 29-06-2020 | Abstrakt | s. 79-95

Data publikacji: | Abstrakt

Attributive errors — their psychological distribution, possible evaluation and elimination in the translating process

This paper attempts to provide for the psychological mechanisms of attribution, which appear in secondary text reception and evaluation of the role of the interpreter. The mechanisms described in the article relate to the difference in the perspective of the actor (the translator) and the observer (reader) and are described in the context of the stereotypes that appear in the source text and secondary text. The author acknowledges that the process of stereotyping is inevitable and at each step the reader asks the question about the (non) translatability is well founded, but is doomed to impose excessive “psychologization”.

Key words: attribution, fundamental attribution error, stereotyping, the process of translation.

Data publikacji: 30-12-2024 | Abstrakt | s. 1-14

Przez ostatnie dwa dziesięciolecia nieustannie wzrasta zainteresowanie osobowością tłumacza i rolą, jaką odgrywa on w procesie translatorskim.

Dorota Gołek-Sepetliewa

Data publikacji: 31-12-2020 | Abstrakt | s. 47-58

This article discusses Olga Tokarczuk’s presence in Bulgaria, drawing on R. Cudak’s theory of reception while presenting translations, strategies of publication and promotion, literary and critical reflection, and non-literary forms of reception. Widescale, effective, and multi-dimensional promotion, reliable translation (S. Borisova, D. Hamze, H. Simeonova-Mitova, G. Krastev), as well as the openness and interest of readers, have created possibilities for an increase in the popularity of Olga Tokarczuk’s works in Bulgaria within the last two decades. The development in Bulgarian culture of critical and literary thought surrounding Tokarczuk’s works (M. Grigorova) is accompanied by the presence of book translations and other selected texts in leading newspapers and magazines („Literaturen vestnik”, „Panorama”, „Kultura”), constituting a significant platform for the popularization of Polish literature.

(Błędny) przekład jako sukces literacki

Marta Skwara

Data publikacji: 29-06-2020 | Abstrakt | s. 29-46

Oba pojęcia — błędny przekład i sukces literacki — dalekie są od klarowności i jednoznaczności, co z jednej strony prowadzi do rozmaitych ograniczeń, ale i do potencjalnie odkrywczych nowych odczytań z drugiej. Co więcej, różnica między przekładem a błędnym przekładem nie jest łatwa do ustalenia (zwłaszcza w przypadku poezji), podobnie jak trudne jest wymierzenie sukcesu literackiego. Oprócz świadectw recepcji pozostają nam przede wszystkim kryteria estetyczne w cenie zarówno sukcesu literackiego, jak i — do pewnego stopnia — udatności przekładu. Aby przedyskutować te nieostre, ale połączone z sobą pojęcia, sięgam do trzech przypadków. Najpierw skupiam się na dwóch niewątpliwych przykładach błędnego przekładu i sukcesu literackiego, aby wskazać możliwe (i niemożliwe) kryteria oceny obu zjawisk. Następnie przechodzę do konkretnego przypadku (błędnego) tłumaczenia i sukcesu literackiego (Romantyczność Mickiewicza w wersji Audena), aby nieco inaczej naświetlić omawiane zagadnienia. Wreszcie konfrontuję szczegółowo analizowany przekład z innym, pozornie podobnym (Dzieci epoki Szymborskiej w przekładzie Bassnett i Kuhiwczaka), ale dającym odmienny efekt końcowy. W zakończeniu wskazuję, na czym może polegać różnica w ocenie błędności lub poprawności przekładu i jego sukcesu czytelniczego.

Data publikacji: | Abstrakt

Czech literature „refractions” of the two Wroclaw’s publishing houses: Afera and Książkowe Klimaty

In this paper we consider the theoretical work of the translatologist André Lefevere and apply his model in practical study. Its focus is the analysis of the work of two Polish publishing houses: Afera and Książkowe Klimaty in the context of Lefevere’s work. The Afera Publishing House was created in the year 2010 and the Książkowe Klimaty Publishing House in 2013, in which year they published 11 books. Through their activity they familiarize many readers with interesting books by worth knowing new Czech authors. Their work depends on a very important condition — the close and careful cooperation of said authors with translators and editors during their text preparation process, as well as their commitment to very high quality graphic design. As a result, Afera and Książkowe Klimaty have managed to establish their fame as publishing houses proposing high quality literature of Czech origin. Their focus group is people who are interested only in the highest quality Czech literature, which is the reason why books they publish match their expectations so well.

O polskich przekładach nowej czeskiej „powieści praskiej” (M. Ajvaza, D. Hodrovej, J. Topola) / About Polish translations of a new Czech „Prague novel” (M. Ajvaz, D. Hodrová, J. Topol)

Józef Zarek

Data publikacji: 01-01-2009 | Abstrakt

The article engages attention to the translation problems of a new „Prague literature”. It analyzes three polish translations of the following novels Podobojí by Hodrová, Druhé město by Ajvaz and Sestra by Topol. It underlines that L. Engelking overcame almost perfectly mixture of the styles, convention, words; but on the other hand he chooses the solutions that weaken the relation between Prague tradition and topography. The Prague context is important as a starting point, however in a translator strategy Prague specific is often subordinated to a general meaning.

Przeciw tłumaczeniu: rola douli literackich w narodzinach i śmierci trzech literatur świata iberyjskiego

Remy Attig , Wojciech Tokarz

Data publikacji: 19-07-2022 | Abstrakt | s. 1-24

The Paradoxes of Polish Poetry’s Anthologising in Bulgarian Language Translations

This article explores two paradoxes related to the concept of the Anthology of Contemporary Polish Poets that are associated with stereotypes about Polish poetry which exists amongst Bulgarian readers and researchers. The first paradox is related to the establishment of a model of the reader, introduced by Boyan Penev in his anthology from 1921, which limits opportunities for comparative reading of the proposed anthologized material. The second paradox is the discrepancy between the statements made in the introduction to the anthology that the relationships between literary phenomena of the periods before and after the Second World War will be clarified and elaborated and the actual omission of the role of the vanguard in the development of the Polish poetry. This paradox is caused by attempts to impose stereotyped notions of poetics and ideology of the literary avant-garde in the time the anthology was published.

Przekład jako zdarzenie hermeneutyczne i wydarzenie publiczne. Kodeks supraski w polskim obiegu kulturowo-społecznym

Izabela Lis-Wielgosz

Data publikacji: 16-12-2025 | Abstrakt | s. 1-22

Rostworowski’s novel Zamek na Czorsztynie, a novel by J. Kalinčiak Reštavrácia translated by P. Stalmach and a drama Matka by J. Gregor Tajovský translated by F. Gwiżdż, showing the circumstances of their appearance and the attitudes of their translators.

Damir Bartol Indoš and Tanja Vrvilo — Dom Ekstremalnego Teatru Muzycznego: przekład performatywny chorwackiej neo/awangardy

Suzana Marjanić

Data publikacji: 18-07-2023 | Abstrakt | s. 1-21

DB Indoš and Tanja Vrvilo — House of Extreme Music Theater work with material from the Croatian historical avant-garde scene in all their performances of exhausting, physical theater, which they approached through the Zagreb circle of zenithists, “through Kamov and Čerina as predecessors of the Futurists (but not the Marinettists), and their influence on the literary-revolutionary circle of rebellious youth. Some of them
included August Cesarec, Đuka Cvijić, Zora Ruklić and members of their ‘Republic of Stenjevac’, members of the Zagreb group Zenit, the lyrics of a visionary film through the books of Ivan Martinac, concrete poetry by Josip Stošić and the silent art that we ‘shachtophonize’ for our parallel performance canon” (Vrvilo 2020). Their systematic work on the performance and reactualization of the neo/avant-garde can be defined, by using Roman Jakobson’s definition, by intersemiotic translations (cf. Munday, Ramos Pinto, Blakesley 2022: 9) into musical theater which, in their example, is based on manipulating sound objects/installations/sculptures with the cut-up technique of original texts into schachtophone scores (moving away from music notation to graphic notation) for schachtophone music, all through the vision of the performance of exhausting (physical) theater with Indoš’s constant dedication to Artaud’s theater of cruelty, the alchemical theater of pre-logic and pre-rationality, a theater that, as a magical ritual, can lead to the healing of society.

Data publikacji: 30-04-2026 | Abstrakt | s. 1-17

On translating Polish literature in the Czech Republic and Czech literature in Poland. Commentary on the 2014 bibliography

The history of Polish‑Czech dealings is long. There is no doubt that the year 1989 brought epochal changes in Polish‑Czech relations. Only then did the Czechs and Poles become rightful neighbours. Territorial disputes are a nonissue and the two countries are connected to each other with mutual affection of the cultural and political elite. Czech‑Polish relations are the best they have been in over a thousand years. This publication, although small in scale, is intended to provide a full picture of the cultural and linguistic relationship between the two nations for the year 2014. It can be viewed as a valuable contribution to this issue. The bibliography is divided into two parts, where the first includes, The bibliography of the translated works of Polish literature in the Czech Republic in 2014, and the second one includes, The bibliography of the translated works of Czech literature in Poland in 2014. Both parts include translated literature. The bibliography is devoted not only to books, but also takes into account periodicals and websites. The ultimate goal of the whole project was to provide both the experts and readers, through the series „Slavic Literature Translations”, with a comprehensive list of translated works of Polish and Czech literature published in Poland and the Czech Republic in the year 2014.

Od romanov do teoloških esejev: pregled slovenskih prevodov poljske literature v letu 2017

Jana Unuk

Data publikacji: 31-10-2019 | Abstrakt | s. 241-256

The article deals with translation choices by Slovene translators from Polish literature in 2017, on the presumption that both literatures, that of source and that of the target language, perceive each other as peripheral in terms of Even-Zohar’s theory of literary polysystems. Nevertheless, as much as 14 Polish books of different genres were translated into Slovene language in 2017, among them novels, poetry, a play, and theological essays.

Spojrzenie na modernistyczną tradycję: „Isprani" Zrinka Ogresty i jego polskie źródło literackie

Nikica Gilić

Data publikacji: 21-07-2023 | Abstrakt | s. 1-17

Among many contacts and similarities between Croatian and Polish cinematic and literary modernism, it is quite interesting to note that Zrinko Ogresta adapted the writings of Marek Hłasko in his feature film Washed Out (Isprani). The comparison of Ogresta’s film to the literary source, The Eighth Day of the Week (Ósmy dzień
tygodnia), before any extensive discussions of wider context, should ascertain the answer to a more elementary question — how close is the story of Ogresta’s film to its Polish literary inspiration?

Jak twórczość mistrza polskiego reportażu stała się „peryferyjną”? O recepcji Jeszcze dzień życia R. Kapuścińskiego w kulturze macedońskiej

Lidija Tanuševska

Data publikacji: 30-10-2019 | Abstrakt | s. 123-133

This article is about the reception of Kapuściński’s book Another Day of Life which was translated and published in Macedonia in 2017. This text explains the reasons of the delayed translation of Kapuściński’s book and the social environment
surrounding its reception, as well as the reception of the reportage as a literary genre in Macedonia. Those are part of the reasons why this literary master has passed by almost unnoticed in this culture and his works are pushed aside from the main literary streams. The article also deals with translating problems concerning the alienation / otherness and the way foreign realities are transferred from Polish to Macedonian language.

Blossoming of Romance Language Literature Translations During the Era of Croatian Second Moderna: Translations of Spanish Literature in the Journal Krugovi

Sanja Knežević

Data publikacji: 09-12-2024 | Abstrakt | s. 1-20

Poets of second wave modernism in Croatian literature, and especially the generation of Krugovi journal poets, open up through translations from other literatures. There has been much talk about the importance of Anglo-Saxon translations penned by Antun Šoljan, Ivan Slamnig, and others, but it is also the generation that opened up to translations of Romance literatures. Translations from Romance literatures (especially Italian literature, and to a lesser extent Spanish) were viewed, due to post-war ideological and political circumstances, as somewhat subversive. However, with the appearance of the journal Krugovi (1952), translations of Italian, Spanish, and French literature experience a new boom. In this paper, I will examine the translation work of poet and editor of Krugovi, Nikola Milićević, and his translations of Spanish poets.

Długa droga do litewskiego przekładu Traktatu poetyckiego Czesława Miłosza

Beata Kalęba

Data publikacji: 29-12-2021 | Abstrakt | s. 1-20

Polska wersja Wzniesienia Milena Ruskowa

Kamen Rikev

Data publikacji: 30-10-2019 | Abstrakt | s. 17-26

The article comments on Milen Ruskov’s third novel Summit (The Heights / Възвишение, 2011) and its critical acclaim in Bulgaria. Set in 19th-century milieu, the revolutionary struggles and the novel’s unique language have been indicated by critics as its most outstanding aspects that provoke new debates on the national and linguistic identity of contemporary Bulgarians. At the same time the novel’s Polish translation by Magdalena Pytlak (Wzniesienie, 2017) poses other questions concerning the promotion of modern Bulgarian culture abroad, the translatability of Ruskov’s work and the translator’s strategies in terms of successfully “importing” Bulgarian literature into the Polish context.

Komentar k pregledu slovenskih prevodov poljske literaturę v letu 2018/Komentarz do słoweńskich przekładów literatury polskiej z 2018 roku

Jana Unuk

Data publikacji: 31-12-2020 | Abstrakt | s. 297-311

Data publikacji: 29-06-2020 | Abstrakt | s. 173-189

Modernistyczna obsceniczność w przekładzie: ukraińskie i rosyjskie tłumaczenia Kochanka Lady Chatterley D.H. Lawrence’a u schyłku ZSRR

Andrij Saweneć

Data publikacji: 23-07-2021 | Abstrakt | s. 1-23

The paper focuses on Ukrainian and Russian translations of Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence, published in 1989 and 1990. The framework for the analysis is provided by Loren Glass’s idea of a significant role of obscene vocabulary in the aesthetics of the twentieth-century Anglo-American literary modernism. The comparison of the two translations shows significant differences in the translators’ approaches to rendering Lawrence’s sexual-based language.

Polish Choices of Czech Female Prose in Translations after 1989

In the article we pay special attention to the presence of Czech female writing in Poland after 1989. In the latest Czech literature, women are becoming more and more significant. In recent years, books by Czech female writers, particularly of a young generation, have been translated. Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of field, capital and habitus, the article is concerned with the role of a translator as an active agent in literary communication.

Analiza porównawcza opisów przemocy w polskich przekładach powieści Rebecca Daphne du Maurier (1938)

Katarzyna Jaworska-Biskup

Data publikacji: 28-09-2024 | Abstrakt | s. 1-22

Data publikacji: 04-09-2026 | Abstrakt | s. 1-30
