Entre le père biologique et le père spirituel : le choix de la rupture chez les personnages de Boubacar Boris Diop

This article is aimed at analyzing the break between fathers and their children in the texts of Boubacar Boris Diop, in which another figure often replaces that of the biological parent. Participating in the identity construction of his foster son, the spiritual father grants him memory which is contradictory to the official history. This clash, omnipresent in Boubacar Boris Diop’s novels, testifies of a change of paradigm revealing a deep crisis of the father figure in African postcolonial societies. We are indeed very far from the mythicized image of the pater nobilis which used to be omnipresent in African literature.

Relire les rites dans Vendredi ou les Limbes du Pacifique de Michel Tournier dans le contexte de la décolonisation

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the extraliterary function of the rites performed on Speranza Island by Robinson Crusoe — a colonizer — and by Friday who represents the Third World. Such investigation is relevant because Michel Tournier’s Friday, or, The Other Island is a postcolonial transvalorization of the classic Robinsonade, in which the author inverts the classic story first published in 1719. In Tournier’s case, owing to the repetitiveness and cyclicity of everyday activities, it is possible to read the rites as an allegoric image of crucial processes — such as language teaching or getting married — taking place in the colonial and postcolonial world of Algeria. The rites in Tournier’s novel are also considered to be a symbolic attempt to establish new relationships between French colonizers and African colonized society, who both witnessed the process of decolonization in the twentieth century.

Posture controversée et discours littéraire : Miano et Mabanckou dans le dispositif médiatique

On the example of two writers of the African diaspora in France, Alain Mabanckou and Léonora Miano, the following paper examines how the notion of the author can be manipulated by the media and become a generator of controversy. Moreover, it deals with the impact of their media coverage (limited to the Parisian press and Websites) of their recent productions: Black Bazar (2009) and Demain, j’aurai vingt ans (2010) by Alain Mabanckou and Les Aubes écarlates (2009) and Blues pour Elise (2010) by Léonora Miano. This impact is evaluated through the comparative analysis of the writers’ works and perspectives.

Kwahulé et Tarnagda : le théâtre africain entre le stéréotype et l’originalité

After a short presentation of theatrical definitions of stereotypes, this article offers an hermeneutic study, focused on the elements of stereotypes and strategies of de-stereotyping in two contemporary African plays: Bintou (1997) by Koffi Kwahulé and Les Larmes du ciel d’août -Tears of the August sky (2010) by Aristide Tarnagda. The analysis aims to demonstrate how Koffi Kwahulé et Aristide Tarnagda indulge, possibly unknowingly, in a subtle play with a cliché.

Négritude en question : de la valorisation de la culture noire à la contestation du mouvement

The aim of the present article is to address the notion of négritude in its variety of aspects, as expressed in poetry, essays and novels. The movement founded its principles on the belief in a common black identity and was aimed at the elevation of the traditional African culture and heritage. Despite its undeniable positive influence, the movement met with criticism from a number of black intellectuals and writers who tended to regard it as being insufficiently militant and who pointed out that its concepts were based excessively on the “white aesthetic” and “the white man’s vision of the world”.

Espressivismo linguistico e culturale in Oltre Babilonia di Igiaba Scego

Postcolonial literature, which did not appear in Italy until the 1980s, started to flourish in that country in the early 1990s. Although it originated there and draws on Italian historic colonial experiences, it can be understood as a way of emphasising the linguistic and cultural separateness of Italian-speaking authors originating from former Italian colonies in Africa (i.e. Libya, Somalia and Ethiopia). It appears that a country like Italy, which has been deprived of its homogeneity and linguistic and cultural cohesion, is particularly susceptible to the absorption of traditions and languages from outside. Postcolonial literature, which at its very basic level is a hybrid, cannot be pushed into the framework of one convention or tradition. On the contrary, it fits well into the mainstream of non-canonical, avant-garde and expressionistic literature that has been present since Dante. Igiaba Scego, the author of Oltre Babilonia, published in 2008, belongs to the generation of young Italian writers of African origin. The article aims to analyse the novel in terms of writing techniques defined as expressionistic at the level of surface, typology of characters and linguistic and stylistic features.

Jean-François Durand shows the world of primeaval cultures of the colonised countries of Africa and Asia, the world fastly going back to the past at the end of the 19th century, presented by André Chevrillon, a traveller and writer, who tries to preserve the vanishing values, falsified with the ideology of the civilised mission of colonists from the beginning of the conquest, as a result of the acculturation of traditional values, religion, traditions and lifestyle of the conquered nations.
