The problem of the method of pastoral theology

Józef Mikołajec

Abstract

In conclusion, it should be noted that it is impossible to present the complex and, as can be seen, still open and developing problem of pastoral theology's methods in such a short article. The author's intention was merely to report on the most important aspects of the matter under discussion and to draw attention to the complexity of the issue, which, according to Stefan Knobloch, a pastoralist from Mainz, still constitutes a kind of "Gordian knot" of theological sciences.
However, the above considerations convince us that pastoral theology, which has enjoyed an independent university existence for only 227 years, continues to search for appropriate methods for its development. Numerous attempts by individual pastoralists have allowed the development of methods presented in this article that are appropriate to the current situation. Thanks to these methods, it can best support the pastoral ministry of the contemporary Church, ensuring its maximum effectiveness. However, it seems that further development of its methods is to be expected. After all, every discipline should continually optimize its own methods to remain relevant to the reality it examines. This applies particularly to pastoral theology, so closely intertwined with an increasingly dynamic reality. Therefore, one can, and even should, expect further constructive research in this regard, which should, above all, further explore the issue of intradisciplinary research outlined above. However, it is difficult to imagine that the fundamental core of her method, namely the pastoral paradigm, would ever be omitted from this research.
