W artykule zanalizowano funkcjonowanie dokumentu jako przedmiotu (artefaktu) w średniowiecznej Europie, na szerokim tle przemian paradygmatu badań nad średniowieczną kulturą pisma, zakładającego wielość form obcowania z pismem, m.in. jego percepcję jako systemu znaków, które mogły być oglądane, a nie „czytane” w nowoczesnym sensie. Fizyczne aspekty dokumentu, obejmujące materiał pisarski, rozplanowanie tekstu na stronie, znaki graficzne i przywieszone do dokumentu przedmioty, to zagadnienie wychodzące poza granice tradycyjnej dyplomatyki. Skłania ono badaczy do bardziej intensywnego dialogu ze znawcami innych nauk pomocniczych, przede wszystkim ze znawcami epigrafiki, gdyż spora liczba dokumentów produkowana była na materiale twardym, a także sfragistyki, ze względu na ścisłą interakcję między dokumentem a pieczęcią w procesie komunikowania przez wzrok i dotyk. W artykule omówiono okazjonalną obecność dokumentu w przestrzeni publicznej – jako elementu rytuałów władzy, pokazywanego na życzenie jego wystawcy lub
odbiorcy albo jako przedmiotu oglądu w praktyce badania jego autentyczności – jak również jego obecność permanentną w postaci tekstu „wyeksponowanego” w kamieniu lub jako fresku (charta lapidaria). We wszystkich analizowanych sytuacjach specjalistyczna lub bardzo ogólna wiedza oglądających decydowała o tym, czy i do jakiego stopnia potrafili oni „odczytać” informacje zakodowane w formacie i materiale dokumentu, w znakach graficznych, iluminacjach i pieczęciach.
