The establishment of a Romance studies journal, Neophilologica, was initiated at the end of the seventies of the last century by the founder of Romance studies in Silesia, Prof. Stanisław Karolak, for many years the director of the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of Silesia and the creator of a research school based on predicate-arguments structures, which to this day is a research distinguishing mark of our scientific centre on a national and international scale.
Very intensive international cooperation and realisation of various grants with the participation of scholars from all over Europe under the supervision of Prof. Karolak resulted in the organisation of numerous conferences and meetings and the need to establish a linguistic journal which would be a forum for the exchange of ideas and discussions concerning both the jointly realised projects and a broader exchange of scientific achievements. This led to the publication of the first issue of the journal in 1980, which until 2007 was published approximately every two years and since 2007 has been published regularly every year.
Aims and Scope
Neophilologica is an academic journal dedicated to linguistics, with a particular focus on Romance and general linguistics. The journal welcomes a wide array of research methodologies and approaches, including theoretical, descriptive, applied, and comparative linguistics. It also promotes research focusing on a specific language, with a particular emphasis on those of the Romance family.
The journal's scope is not limited to a specific linguistic approach, making it a versatile platform for researchers to share their findings. It serves as a bridge between different linguistic disciplines, fostering a comprehensive understanding of language phenomena. The journal's openness to various research methodologies reflects its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity in linguistic research.
Neophilologica's commitment to embracing a wide range of linguistic research methodologies aligns with the view that 'there is nothing more practical than a good theory', emphasising the importance of theoretical frameworks in linguistics that allow the underlying rules and principles of language to be identified, formulated and explained through observation and generalisation.
Each issue is focused on a specific theme, which is the main content of the issue. The rest of the issue is allocated to other research topics.
The languages of publication are French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English.
Neophilologica is a journal whose primary referential version is its electronic (online) version. The entire volume is published online at the end of November of a given year in full open access, and individual accepted articles appear on the journal’s website as they are edited.
