“SHMONTSES”: THE STORY OF A SINGLE LOANWORD

Anna Krasowska Logo ORCID

Abstract

In her article, Anna Krasowska discusses the process of adaptation and semantic development of the Jewish loanword shmontse in the Polish language of the 20th and 21st century. The semantic adaptation of this word depends not only on the transfer of Yiddish meanings into Polish, but also on different changes, involving the narrowing and expansion of the meaning, the change of the emotional coloring, and the elimination of multiple meanings. These changes are caused by different intralinguistic and extralinguistic factors.
