Abstract

This article is devoted to the elements of newspeak in the statements of Vladimir Putin. The empirical material consists of the speeches of the President of the Russian Federation dedicated to the conflict in Ukraine at the beginning of its two phases – the hybrid (2014) and the full-scale war (2022). The purpose of the study is to identify and describe the role of label words, which are one of the most important elements of the modern newspeak of the Russian authorities. The article characterizes the topoi that form the basis for the evaluative nominations of the enemy used by Putin, which fit into the opposition “friend – foe”. The study of labels in the texts was carried out using the method of content analysis and lexical-semantic analysis. The results of the study show that, in comparison with Putin’s speeches from the beginning of the conflict in Donbass (2014), in the statement from 2022 the enemy category has been expanded, covering in addition to the Ukrainian side, authorities of the US and Western Europe, as well as internal opponents.
