The article contrasts three novels of the end of the 19th century concerning Ancient Rome confronted with the birth of Christianity. Works by Kraszewski, Sienkiewicz, and Jeske-Choiński allow the author to explain the reasons of dealing with the issues in question (among others experienced crisis or the close of modern culture).
