The right to property is one of the fundamental rights granted to individuals in a state governed by the rule of law, which means that any unlawful violation of the rules governing the right to dispose of one’s property is behaviour that affects the sense of security in society. Among the list of prohibited acts, it is important to distinguish the crime of destruction of property, which targets material goods but is not related to the perpetrator’s financial gain. The crime, as defined in Article 288 of the Criminal Code, is characterised by a pointless act of vandalism. In this article, the author analyses the characteristics of the offence in question and conducts empirical research based on the files of completed court proceedings. The aim of the study is to show the modus operandii of perpetrators of the offence of destruction of property, to examine the criminological profile of the perpetrator and to analyse the above prohibited act in terms of common crime. Conclusions: the crime systematised in Article 288 of the Criminal Code should be classified as a common crime, which, as a rule, is committed in an unplanned manner. The perpetrators of the crime in question act ad hoc, and their criminological profile indicates that they are people for whom other people’s property has no value.
