"Monika” wurde von K. Miarka gegründet um die katholische Arbeiterfamilien, und besonders die Mütter, auf ihre angesichts des Kulturkampfes wachsende Verantwortung für die Erziehung der Kinder aufmerksam zu machen und sie auf diese Aufgaben vorzubereiten.
In populärer Weise wurden in „Monika” die Prinzipien der Erziehung im christlichen Sinne dargelegt: Ehe und Familie sind göttlicher Herkunft und deswegen soll ihr sakramentaler Charakter gewahrt werden. Er festigt die Ehe und heilgt das Leben der Familie. Die Kinder sind eine kostbare Gabe, die Gott den Eltern anvertraut, damit sie sie gemäss den Geboten Gottes und der menschlichen Würde erziehen. Sie müssen dabei die angeborenen Eigenschaften des Kindes beachten und das christliche Ideal im Auge behalten. Die Eltern tragen die Hauptverantwortung für ihre Kinder — die Schule steht an zweiter Stelle, obwohl die Ausbildung die sie den Kindern bietet, hoch zu schätzen ist. In der Erziehung spielen Religion und das Beispiel der Eltern die grösste Rollé.
Die Erziehung soll auf verschiedenen Ebenen vollzogen werden. Die „natürliche” Ebene umfasst Hygiene, Sorge um Gesundheit und ausreichende Erholung wobei die Spiele im Freien besonders betont werden. „Monika” fordert in jeder Ortschaft einen aus der Gemeindekasse bezahlten Arzt.
Die religiöse Erziehung soll das Kind möglichst früh in das sakramentale und Gebetsleben einführen. Die Eltern sollen sorgen dafür, dass die Fest — und Sonntage in der Familie würdig gefeiert werden. Die Kinder sollen auch lernen den Glauben im Alltag zu leben.
Die moralische Erziehung beruht auf Bemühungen um das Ausrotten böser Neigungen des Kindes und dem Einüben entgegengesetzter Tugenden. „Monika” zählt auf eine ganze Reihe von Tugenden, auf die sie besonderen Wert legt. Es sind: Liebe, Gerechtigkeit, Wahrhaftigkeit, Arbeidsamkeit, Fleiss. Sie fordert auch Vorbereitung der Jugend auf Ehe, wobei Liebe und gegenseitige Hilfe hervorgehoben werden.
Mit religiöser Erziehung empfiehlt „Monika” die nationale zu verbinden. Die Kinder sollen lernen ihre Muttersprache zu lieben, sie sollen die Geschichte des polnischen Volkes kennen, und den Gesang polnischer Lieder pflegen. Die Eltern sollen darauf gedenken, dass mit der polnischen Muttersprache meistens auch die Religion verloren geht.
Die Redakteure „Monikas” sind der Ansicht, dass Bildung dem Kinde aus religiösen Gründen nötig ist. Sie lässt es nämlich besser den Glauben verstehen. Wahre Wissenschaft führt zur Religion, diese wieder fördert das Morale des Volkes.
