Women's Voice: Russian Women Writers on Responsibility for War

Monika Sidor Logo ORCID

Abstract

The present study is devoted to analysing women writers’ statements on the war in Ukraine. The research material consists of texts by Russian women writers of international renown (Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, Maria Stepanova, Lyudmila Ulitskaya), representing different generations and literary styles, and associated with various genres. The political views of these writers were not the subject of special discussion. The study aimed to identify and analyze the distinctive features of women’s narratives about war. The analysis began with the observation that, historically, women’s writing on war was not particularly distinctive, even though some women had direct experience of warfare. In contrast to the male perspective, which is predominantly represented in literature depicting the last century’s wars, women’s writing adopts a radically different approach. The theoretical framework for the study was underpinned by affective poetics and the concept of “tender narrative.” The analysis revealed that emotions play a pivotal role in the diverse types of texts and statements presented here, with the motifs of compassion and empathy assuming a dominant position. Furthermore, the subject of Russia’s responsibility for the war is openly discussed, with an increasing awareness of the influence of these views on societal discourse.
