"Wieki Stare i Nowe" (Eng. trans. "The Old and the New Ages") – Aims and Scope

This journal is devoted to the study of a wide range of issues related to broadly understood borderlands: cultural, ethnic, national and political. Its scope ranges over Polish and general history from antiquity to the most recent times. The editors’ focus is on the transitory and borderland region of Silesia, which is only natural given the obvious ties that link it with the academic community by which the journal is published. However, in line with the open policy advocated by the editorial board, authors are invited to submit articles providing as broad a view as possible (chronologically, geographically, culturally etc.) of all kinds of borderlands, including metaphorical ones. Comprehensive accounts of the history of areas of ‘transition’, especially those concerned with threats, dilemmas and complications experienced over the centuries by their inhabitants (as well as with settlements and arrangements elaborated in relation to these challenges) show that borderland issues form a very fertile, attractive and scholarly significant field of research which is likely to become a ‘keystone’ of studies conducted in different ways and from various perspectives both by historians and by scholars representing other humanities. The latter’s contributions are also welcomed by the editorial board.

The journal is designed to provide a forum for exchanging ideas and presenting research work into the field in question, including especially comparative research, to which borderland issues seem to be particularly amenable. “Wieki Stare i Nowe” will thus feature articles offering comparative analyses of processes and relations witnessed in the region of Silesia, on the border between Poland and Russia (and between Poland and Turkey), in the areas of Alsace-Lorraine, on the borderlands of the Old Poland and the adjoining territories (Greater Poland, Lesser Poland, Lithuania, Courland, Red Ruthenia, Moldavia and Brandenburg) and in frontier regions that came into being as a result of contacts between different cultures, a good example of which is provided by the Roman Empire. Articles published in the journal are supposed to show mechanisms promoting and preventing a peaceful co-existence of different communities inhabiting particular borderlands, and to describe cultural differences and dissimilarities existing between them, including conflicts and animosities to which they gave rise. Not only do articles published in “Wieki Stare i Nowe” present and advance research into borderland topics, but they also offer insights into various issues facing the world of today.

The Journal’s history

The periodical’s first issue, bearing the title “Wieki Stare i Nowe”, came out in 2000 under the editorship of Professors Maria W. Wanatowicz and Idzi Panic. The issue inaugurated a multi-volume publication which a few years later was included in the list of scholarly journals parameterized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. “Wieki Stare i Nowe” remained on the list until 2018 and returned in 2021.

Over the course of its twenty-year history the journal has undergone several changes in its editorship, with each new editor setting it new tasks and objectives. This entailed changes in the frequency of its publication, the volume of particular issues and the journal’s graphic design.

The following served as the journal’s successive editors-in-chief:

Maria W. Wanatowicz, Idzi Panic, vol.: 1, 2000–1 (6), 2009; Maria W. Wanatowicz, Sylwester Fertacz, vol.: 2 (7), 2010–4(9), 2012; Sylwester Fertacz, Agata A. Kluczek, vol.: 5 (10), 2013–11 (16), 2016; Agata A. Kluczek, Dariusz Rolnik, vol.: 12 (17), 2017; Agata A. Kluczek, Dariusz Rolnik, Maciej Fic, vol. 13 (18), 2018–18 (23), 2023.

In addition to regularly published issues, there have also appeared special issues

  • „Wieki Stare i Nowe”: Ludzie i elity pogranicza. Red. Maciej Fic, Ryszard Kaczmarek. Katowice 2012;
  • Wieki Stare i Nowe (The Old and the New Ages, vol. 2 (7). Edited by Sylwester Fertacz and Maria W. Wanatowicz. Katowice 2013
  • Wieki Stare i Nowe (The Old and the New Ages, vol. 3 (8). Edited by Sylwester Fertacz and Maria W. Wanatowicz. Katowice 2013.

Presently, the journal appears as a yearbook of the Institute of History of the University of Silesia in Katowice. Articles published in it cover Polish and general history from antiquity to the most recent times. Original research into borderland issues is preferred. The journal is divided into the following sections: Articles, and Review articles and Reviews. All the articles that appear in the pages of “Wieki Stare i Nowe” are peer-reviewed. They also have English summaries.
