Nach Zusammenzählung der Ergebnisse der durchgeführten Forschungen muß man feststellen, daß tatsächlich das einzige Kriterium der Eigenart der Mathematik, mit welchem Cantor sich bedient hat, bildete die Hinführlichkeit der Theorie zur Arithmetik der natürlichen Zahlen und nach dem Jahr 1884 die Hinführlichkeit zur Mengenlehre. Das war ein metamatematisches Kriterium, welches sich an der im neunzehnten Jahrhundert durchgeführten Arithmetisation der klassischen Mathematik stützt.
Man kann glauben, daß in der Überzeugung von Cantor dieses Kriterium diese und nur diese Theorien umfaßten, welche vorher zur Mathematik auf Grund des ostensiven Kriterium angerechnet wurden und der Mengenlehre. Es war in dieser Bedeutung „geöffnet“, daß jede neue Theorie, welche man zu der Mengenlehre herabführen könnte, würde als mathematische angenommen sein. Dagegen die von Cantor unternommenen Versuche, das Kriterium der Mathematikkeit auf anderen Grundlagen: philosophischen, oder sich berufenden zu den in der Mathematik angewandten Methoden zu stützen, setzen schließlich voraus – wie es gezeigt wurde – das metamatematische Kriterium.
Man muß auch betonen, daß Cantor – Schöpfer der Mengenlehre – als erster auf den Einfall gekommen ist, die Theorien, durch Herbeiführung zur Mengenlehre, zu unifizieren. Solche Auffassung wird auch gegenwärtig angenommen und einst gehörte sie zu den wesentlichen Thesen des Programmes der Logizisten.
In dieser Schrift wurden auch Aussagen von Cantor berücksichtigt, welche die Zusammenhänge der Mathematik mit der Philosophie und Theologie charakterisieren. Es geht aus ihnen hervor, daß er die Mengenlehre als formale Ontologie wahrgenommen hat. Interessant sind auch seine Bemerkungen, die sich auf die dienstbare Rolle der Mengenlehre, gegenüber der Philosophie und Theologie beziehen. Die analysierten Texte geben aber keine Bestätigung der Vermutungen, daß Cantor sich noch mit irgendeiner anderen, als hier erwähnten Konzeption der Eigenart der Mathematik bedient hat.
