Qualsiasi metodo esegetico sano si allaccia alla natura del testo da interpretare. Per tale motivo in questo articolo si voleva prendere in considerazione la concezione che Ambrogio nutre nei riguardi del testo sacro. Il fatto più gravido per l’ermeneutica ambrosiana è ovviamente la credenza di Dio autore del testo sacro: „la Scrittura in ogni sua parte esa la grazia di Dio” (Expl. ps. I 4). La Scrittura è vista da Ambrogio come il luogo della continua presenza di Dio all’uomo: come il paradiso dove Dio passeggia alla ricerca dell’uomo. Un’altra pista da battere per delineare meglio la visione ambrosiana della Scrittura è stata quella dell’individuazione delle imagini, a cui il vescovo milanese affida un ruolo importante nell’espressione della sua concezione. La Bibbia quindi è per lui il mare grande da cui si partono le acque di grazia e in cui confluiscono i vari rivoli di vita. La sua „auctoritas” viene rappresentata con l’immagine di una nube, etc. Nonorovi una esplicita teorizzazione del numero dei sensi esegetici. Il Santo ne è quello più „ovvio”, della „littera historia”, il „sensus simplex”. Il secondo livello ermeneutico è espresso da Ambrogio con termini quali „intelligibilis”, „allegoria”, „sensus altior”. Invece, il terzo livello della lettura ermeneutica si presenta nella categoria della interpretazione mistica. „Intelligere mystica” vuol dire per Ambrogio comprendere l’economia della salvezza operata nella storia, leggendola nella globalità salvifica del Cristo preesistente come „Logos”, fondamento di unità e armonia nel cosmo. L’interpretazione mistica o cristica allora, raccoglie in sé tutti i sensi esegetici, li invera superandoli come tensione anagogica verso il cielo dei cieli.
