Als „schöne Literatur” verstehen wir heute den Schrifttumsteil, der die Werke umfasst, in welchen die ästhetische Funktion eine überragende Rolle spielt. „Locus theologicus”—das ist einer von den wichtigeren Begriffen, die in der theologischen Erkenntnis und in der Methodologie der Theologie, in Anlehnung an die Topik von Aristoteles verwandt worden ist. „Loci theologici” versteht man vor allem als Quelle der theologischen Argumentation, als Orte, in welchen sich für die Theologie massgebende Sätze befinden, die als theologische Argumente fungieren, in welchen man die Argumentation für die Theologie suchen soll. In diesem Kontext erscheint die fundamentale Frage: kann man schöne Literatur als „locus theologicus” behandeln? Nach Meinung von vielen modernen Theologen war sie tatsächlich ein solcher Ort immer, als eine sekundäre, äussere Hilfsquelle mit einem wahrscheinlichen Charakter. Aber warum? Ursprüngliche, mysteriöse Wirklichkeit des Wortes, die Bibel als Theologie und gleichzeitig als Literatur, der Reichtum der Geschichten von theologisch-literarischen Zusammenhängen, die Tatsache und die Errungenschaft der Theologie des literarischen Wortes—das sind Quellen und Ursachen, dass man Literatur als einen theologischen Ort wahrnimmt. Aber wie? Man kann hier unterscheiden: Erkenntnissebene, ein Bereich von Problem, die mit der Erfahrung des Glaubens verbunden sind (unter anderem die Literatur als „praeparatio evangelica” und auch ihre prophetische und kerygmatische Funktion), ein Bereich der Erneuerung des theologischen Schrifttums (besonders im Bereich der Sprache und der Genologie). Hier gibt es auch die „literarische” Theologie. Und dass ist ein Phänomen, dass eine Quintessenz der theologischen Möglichkeiten der schönen Literatur ist.
