Le schéma d’Origène a sa place dans la théologie du christianisme primaire, quoique, a l’époque, le passage par la Mer Rouge reste encore une forme traditionnelle du baptême. Origène dans ses homélies pour le Livre de Josué trouve que le passage par le Jourdain sous la direction de Josué est le type exact du baptême chrétien, parce qu’il est la porte de la Terre Promise, où il ne faut pas avoir peur, où l’on est chez soi (dans son pays). Cependant le passage par la Mer Rouge était pour Origène l’annonce de l’entrée au catéchuménat.
La totalité de l’Exode est connue comme la figure d’initiation chrétienne. Origène savait unir l’histoire d’Israel en un seul signe annonçant la vie chrétienne. La Bible est la matière essentielle des homélies d’Origène et il la comprend surtout à la façon spirituelle, chaque vers a pour lui un sens plus profond.
Les homélies d’Origène nous sont arrivées par Rufin, traducteur des écrits d’Alexandrin. C’est pourquoi les expressions baptismales
se sont conservées seulement à la forme latine.
C'est pour cette raison il faut analyser des expressions comme: sacramentum baptismi, mysterium baptismi, baptismum salutare, etc.
Nous pouvons conclure des déclarations indirectes ce qu'Origène dit à propos du baptême. Il définit les conditions du baptême qui sont les suivantes: la conversion complète, le repentir du cœur, la foi, l'acceptation de l'Evangile. Il réfléchit aussi aux effets rédempteurs du Saint Baptême: le rachat des péchés, la connaissance de la vérité, l'entrée dans la terre nouvelle, la grâce divine, l'héritage des biens célestes, l'union avec le Christ. Ce n'est pas pourtant un cours systématique sur le sujet du baptême, mais des propos dispersés. Cela vient du caractère des homélies que l'auteur avait écrites.
L'oeuvre d'Origène est très riche et c'est ainsi qu'elle peut exciter à d'autres études, dont le domaine du baptême.
