„Non possumus“ des Hl. Hilarius von Poitieres

Abstract

Im Artikel werden die Genese und der Inhalt der drei Schriften des hl. Hilarius von Poitiers besprochen: Liber primus ad Constantium, Liber secundus ad Constantium und Contra Constantium Imperatorem. Der Verfasser gibt Antwort auf die Frage nach den Ursachen, die bewirken, dass der Liber contra Imperatorem anders geartet ist als die zwei ersten Schriften. Die zwei ersten weisen auf den Hilarius hin, der immer ein friedlicher Mensch war, immer zum Dialog, ja wir könnten sogar sagen, zum ökumenischen Dialog bereit war, immer Kontakt mit anderen Menschen suchte, der niemanden verletzen wollte, nicht einmal seinen Gegner.
Hilarius war fähig die grössten Opfer zu tragen, so lange er den bösen Willen seines Gegners oder die Bedrohungen der höchsten Werte des Menschen und der ganzen Menschheit nicht erkannt hatte. Sobald er aber zur Überzeugung kam, dass dies der Fall ist, war der immer zu Kompromissen bereite Hilarius der entschiedene Verfechter der Wahrheit und hier sehen wir eben den Grund für das „non possumus“ das er ausgesprochen hat. Diesem „non possumus“ folgt nicht mehr der Dialog, sondern eine Handlung, die sich am stärksten in der Schrift Contra Constantium Imperatorem ausgedrückt hat.
Scharfer und kontrastierender Ton diese Schrift erhält seine Begründung in der religiösen Haltung des Heiligen. Diese Haltung verbietet ihm irgendeinen Schritt zu tun, der diesem „non possumus“ widersprechen würde.
