In der Diözese Katowice, einer der am meisten industrialisierten Diözesen Polens, befinden sich 4 Marienwallfahrtsorte: Piekary, Pszów, Lubecko und Turza. Von diesen hat Piekary die grösste Bedeutung erlangt. Vor dem Gnadenbild der Mutter Gottes in Piekary hat König Jan Sobieski gebetet (1683) vor seinem Feldzug gegen die Türken, die Wien bedrohten. Hier hat auch den katholischen Glauben der Kurfürst August der Starke bekannt, bevor er das Königreich Polen übernommen hat.
Seit dem XVIII Jahrh. unterliegt das Gebiet einer ununterbrochenen Migration aus Ost und West. Die Anziehungskraft bildet die rege Entwicklung der Industrie, aber die Verschmelzung der neuen Einwohner mit der eingeborenen Bevölkerung ist im grossen Masse dem Gnadenort Piekary zu verdanken, das zum Zentrum des geistigen Lehens der Diözese wurde. Besondere Bedeutung für diese Integration haben die alljährlichen Pilgerfahrten nach Piekary, der Frauen im August und der Männer im Mai. Mehrere Hunderttausend Männer, grösstenteils Arbeiter kommen in Piekary am letzten Sonntag mit ihrem Bischof und den eingeladenen Gästen aus der ganzen Welt zusammen um ihren Glauben zu bekunden und um die Anliegen der Diözese, die besonders gross im sozialen Bereich sind zu beten. In diesem Zusammenhang wird die Mutter Gottes in Piekary als Mutter der Liebe und sozialen Gerechtigkeit verehrt.
Einen Höhepunkt dieses Integrationsprozesses bildete das Treffen des Papstes Johannes Paul II mit fast zwei Millionen Arbeiter in Katowice (1983) auf dem Flugplatz, wo man das Gnadenbild von Piekary brachte und gemeinsam betete. Das Thema der Ansprache des Papstes war „das Evangelium der Gerechtigkeit und der sozialen Liebe”. Er schliess mit dem Wunsch: Möge es euch (dieses Evangelium) um die Mutter Gottes und Ihr Sanktuarium in Piekary tief vereinen, so wie es die vorangehende Geschlechter hier vereint hatte.
