Der Artikel hatte in seinen Voraussetzungen einen urkundlichen Charakter. Der Verfasser wollte die Reichweite der Pilgerfahrten der Oberschlesier im XIX und anfangs des XX Jahrhunderts beurkunden. Das Gebiet der Untersuchungen umfasste diejenigen Pfarrgemeinden, die im zentralen Teil des industriellen Oberschlesien lagen, also die Gebiete, die im XIX Jahrhundert durch die Verstädterung und Industrialisierung gesellschaftlich bedeutend verändert wurden. Aus den zahlreichen Quellenmaterialien ist ersichtlich, dass die Einwohner des industriellen Schlesien am liebsten zu ihren Pilgerorten — Piekary, Pszów, Góra Św. Anny (St. Annaberg), Bogucice pilgerten. Zahlreiche Pilgerscharen begaben sich ebenfalls ausser der Grenzen Schlesiens — Częstochowa, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Alwernia, Czerna, Kraków, Oświęcim. In dieser Zeit bildete ein Hindernis für die Pilgerfahrten die Verweltlichung der Orden (1810) und die Zeit des Kulturkampfes (ab 1874). Die grösste Wiederbelebung der Pilgerfahrten wurde Ende des XIX und anfangs des XX Jahrhunderts beobachtet. Dies erklärt sich durch die Bekanntmachung des Dogmas über das Unbefleckte Empfängnis der allerseligsten Jungfrau Maria (1854) und die Erscheinung zu Lourdes (1858). Ende des XIX Jahrhunderts fanden in Oberschlesien markante Umwertungen von nationalem Charakter statt. Zu den Symptomen der sog. „Nationalrenaissance” im XIX Jahrhundert zählen ebenfalls die Pilgerfahrten zu den Nationalsanktuarien — Częstochowa und Kraków.
Die schlesischen Pilger pilgerten am liebsten in der Zeit von der Karwoche bis Ende September. In dieser Zeit waren die Marienfeste höchst populär. Ende des XIX Jahrhunderts begannen neben den traditionellen — gesamtkirchlichen und individuellen Pilgerfahrten, Standesplgerfahrten und Pilger-fahrten von besonderem Charakter. Es wurde bemerkt, dass in den neugegründeten Pfarrgemeinden die Seelsorger die Richtung den Pilgerfahrten gaben. Den Einfluss auf die Wahl des Sanktuariums hatte ebenfalls der Ruhm der Stätte, der Wert der Seelsorge an dieser Stelle, die nationalen und politischen Beziehungen.
