Das Problem des Verhältnisses der wissenschaftlichen Evolutionstheorie zum Glauben besitzt seine stürmische und reiche Geschichte, die auch bis zum heutigen Tag nicht beendet ist. Drei Gründe haben die Entstehung dieses Streitproblems verursacht: Den ersten gab die Ausnützung der wissenschaftlichen Evolutionstheorie zur Bekämpfung der christlichen Religion. Als zweiter gilt der dem Menschen eigene Konservatismus, welcher den neuen Theorien und Lösungen misstrauisch entgegensteht. Den dritten bildet das Gefühl der angeblichen Demütigung, die der Darwinismus durch die Einschliessung der Menschen in die natürliche Evolution bringen sollte.
Die Analyse der Evolutionstheorie und der Erzählung der hl. Schrift über die Entstehung der Welt und des Menschen zeigt, dass der Streit nur auf der Ebene der Interpretationen sich abspielt. In der Darstellung der Genesis verflechtet sich der überzeitliche geoffenbarte Inhalt mit dem sprachlichen Gewand der Epoche des inspirierten Verfassers. Die Ursache des Streites liegt in der Verwechslung des mythologischen Gewandes mit dem geoffenbarten Inhalt. Dagegen betrifft das, was in der Erzählung der hl. Schrift gemeint und inspiriert ist, nicht wissenschaftliche Kenntnisse über die Entstehung der Welt und des Menschen, sondern überzeitliche Wahrheiten des Glaubens, welche von dem kulturellen Niveau der Epoche unabhängig sind. Der inspirierte Verfasser spricht von einem Dialog Gottes mit den Menschen und nicht von einem Dialog des Menschen mit der Natur. Zwischen diesen beiden Dialogen kann es keinen Streit geben. Darum müssen wir statt der disjunktiven Alternative: Wissenschaft oder Glaube, die Konjunktion: Wissenschaft und Glaube stellen.
Die hl. Schrift ist kein Lehrbuch der Wissenschaften, sie lässt den Wissenschaftlern in der Forschung der Natur freie Hand. Und die Wissenschaft als Wissenschaft ist zur Erörterung religiöser Wahrheiten nicht berufen. Die Wissenschaft erklärt weder die ganze Wirklichkeit, noch die letzten Gründe der natürlichen Evolution und gibt hier freies Feld der Philosophie und der Theologie. Der Glaube gibt ethische Normen, nach denen sich auch Wissenschaftler in ihrer Arbeit richten sollen, um den Menschen keinen Schaden zu bringen. Diese Normen sind in den zwei Geboten der Liebe, die das Wesen der christlichen Religion zusammenfassen, enthalten. Die zwei Gebote der Liebe betreffen also das Ethos der Forscher und auf diese Weise wahrt der Glaube den Menschen vor der Alienation und vor der wissenschaftlichen, politischen, sozialen und ökonomischen Manipulation.
