Armut, Gehorsam und Demut sind die drei Grundsätze des Ordenslebens. Eine tiefgehende Analyse der Aussagen des hl. Franziskus zeigt den Grudnsatz: Ein Leben im Geiste Christi ist die Nachfolge Christi in der Armut, im Gehorsam und in der Demut. Im Geiste Christi — weil Christus Armut, absolute Demut, und freiwilligen Gehorsam wählte, indem er seinen eigenen Willen dem Willen seines himmlischen Vaters unterstellte.
Zunächst ist für den hl. Franziskus die Armut ein Standpunkt, der den ganzen Menschen in Anspruch nehmen muss. Äussere Armut ist nur ein Zeichen innerer Armut, derer Ausmasse tiefer und breiter sind. Die Armut ist jedoch nicht das Ziel für sich selbst. Ihr Charakter liegt im „Dienen". Diese Armut soll den Weg zur völligen — unteilbaren Liebe Gottes bahnen. Deshalb können sich die Formen der äusseren Armut entsprechend den Zeitgeschehen ändern.
Das Geheimnis der erlösenden Gehorsams Christi und seine Lebensvision im Gehorsam als Mittel die Freiheit der Kindschaft Gottes zu erlangen, unterstreichen den Wert des aktiven und verantwortenden Gehorsams, wie auch seinen dienenden Charakter. Sowohl der Vorgesetzte wie auch der Untergebene sollen nach dem selben Motiv der Liebe handeln und den Willen Gottes suchen. Sowohl Befehlen wie auch Gehorsam leisten, beides bedeutet: der Gemeinschaft dienen und anderen zur Verfügung stehen. Und schliesslich: jeder, der arm sein will, muss den Mut haben demütig und einträchtig zu sein. Armut ist nicht autentisch und ergiebt sich als eine Form des Hochmuts, — wenn es sich um Beifall und das „gesehen werden" handelt. Wahre Demut fordert den Einblick in sich selbst. Nur so können wir das Gute wie auch das Schlechte, welches in uns ist, erkennen. Demut beruht weniger auf Selbsterniedrigung, vielmehr auf Anerkennung Gottes und unserer Mitmenschen. Getreu den Worten des hl. Paulus (Röm: XII, 10; Fil: 2,3) ist sie ein charakteristisches Zeichen der christlichen Liebe. Ein Franziskaner der arm, gehorsam und demütig ist, wird der Welt immer ein Zeugnis wahrer Liebe geben.
