Der hl. Franziskus aus Assisi, Vater, Fundator und Gesetzgeber des Franciscanerordens gab Anfang einem neuen Lebensstil, einer neuen Art des Gebetes und der Betrachtung Gottes. Somit ist er der Begründer eines besonderen geistlichen Systems. Er lehrte die Menschen, wie sie Gott suchen sollen, Ihm dienen und Ihn lieben sollen. Durch seinen Gruss „Friede und Heil” gab er ein Beispiel des christlichen Zusammenlebens, indem er alle Bruder und Schwester nannte.
Getreu seinem Gründer schufen dann grosse Gestalten und Mystiker wie Antonius aus Padua, Aleksander von Hales, Bonaventura und Johannes Duns Scot theoretische Grundlagen für das Ideal eines Lebens. Diese können wir folgend darstellen:
1. Gott ist die Güte, die Liebe und das höchste Gut.
2. Als zweite Idee gilt der Christozentrismus: „mit Christus, in Christus, um Christus”.
3. Betrachtend das Leben des hl. Franziskus sehen wir drittens die Ehrfurcht zur Eucharistie.
4. Zuletzt bewundern wir den hl. Franziskus als grossen Marienverehrer.
Der Weg des hl. Franziskus ist auch heute aktuell. Er zeigt, dass der Kontakt mit Gott einfach und schlicht ist, der Kontakt mit den Menschen und der Welt — menschlich und verständnisvoll.
Franziskus weicht in seiner Grösse nur vor Christus. Gerade deshalb ist er für viele Menschen der Gegenwart eine Brücke zu Christus. Viele Menschen verdanken ihm Kraft und Mut zur Überwindung aller Schwierigkeiten in kritischen Momenten ihres Lebens. Gilbert K. Chesterton, der das Leben des hl. Franziskus schildert, schrieb folgende Worte: Da der hl. Franziskus die Welt nicht völlig ändern konnte, begann er von sich selbst. Darin liegt seine grosse Kraft und Orginalität. Liebe, Armut und Freude sind nur Konsequenzen dieser Kraft.
