P. Teilhard de Chardin stellt die Entstehung des menschlichen Psychismus, d. h. der menschlichen Seele, im Rahmen seiner phänomenologischen und evolutionistischen Vision des Kosmos dar. Auch die Neuscholastiker beschäftigt die Frage, wie von diesem Standpunkte aus die Transzendenz der geistigen Seele sich verhält.
Dieses Problem kann man auf drei Stufen erwägen: als Genesis, Natur und Unsterblichkeit der menschlichen Seele. Die experimentelle Genesis der Seele versteht Teilhard als historischen Prozess der Erscheinung des Geistes im Verlauf der immer höher strebenden Verwirklichung des kosmischen Urstoffes. Die menschliche Seele ist nicht ex nihilo subiecti erschaffen, sondern sie ist auf dem Wege der Transformazion des einfachen Bewusstsein in das Selbstbewusstsein oder in der Reflexion „geboren”. Durch eine solche phänomenologische Auffassung der Genesis des menschlichen Psychismus stellt sich Teilhard den Ansichten der Neuscholastiker entgegen, weil nach diesen die menschliche Seele, als geistige Substanz, in ihre Entstehung keinen Ursprung und keine Verbindungen mit der Materie haben kann.
Trotz der genetischen Verbindung mit dem kosmischen Urstoff ist der menschliche Psychismus anderer, höherer Natur als der tierische. Einmal über das tierische Bewusstsein erhoben, ist die Reflexion zu den isolierten Elementen, aus welchen sie erstanden ist, nicht mehr reduzierbar. Darum ist auch die menschliche Seele nicht ein Epiphänomen der Materie, sondern ein neues Phänomen, gehört jedoch einer höheren Ordnung in der Serie der Erscheinungen an.
Die menschliche Seele überbietet den tierischen Psychismus nur dann, wenn der Verlauf ihrer Entwicklung irreversibel ist. In der Terminologie Teilhards ist das gleichbedeutend mit der Unsterblichkeit der Seele. Eben die Unsterblichkeit bedingt die Transzendenz der Seele und erhält sie auf der Höhe der Reflexion und Personalität.
Die phänomenologische Auffassung der Transzendenz der menschlichen Seele „provoziert” die Neuscholastiker zur Überarbeitung dieses Problems vom philosophischen Standpunkte aus. Die Anfänge sind schon getan, z. B. durch A. D. Serillanges OP, K. Rahner SJ, R. T. Francoeur, A. Kolb u. a. Den wirklich kritischen Punkt dieser Bestrebungen bildet die Darstellung der Genesis der geistigen Seele im Rahmen und nach den Begriffen der Entwicklungstheorie. Vielleicht wird diese Darstellung mit der Schaffung einer neuen christlichen Seinsynthese, vielleicht mit der existentiell-evolutiven Seinstheorie verbunden sein.
