Das weltliche Brauchtum hat sich im christlichen Europa seit der Aufklärungszeit verbreitet, konkret seit der Französischen Revolution und danach, besonders in Russland und in den Ländern, die nach der Oktoberrevolution im Jahre 1917 von Russland abhängig waren.
Volkspolen – der staatliche Organismus der kommunistischen Regierung vom 1944 bis 1989 – hatte alle Eigenschaften eines totalitären Landes. Die kommunistische Macht hat die Religion als einen ideologischen Gegner und die katholische Kirche als eine kräftige und gefährliche Institution betrachtet. Das kulturelle Leben der Gesellschaft, das in der marxistisch-leninistischen Ideologie eine eigenartige Anerkennung fand, war der Kontrolle und der Bildung der neuen postrevolutionären Wirklichkeit unterstellt. Eines der Ziele der propagandistischen Handlungen des kommunistischen Landes war die Erschaffung neuer Kulturmodellen, deren Verbreitung „eine revolutionäre Bedeutung” hatte. In Zusammenstoss mit der alten Kultur Polens, die christliche Wurzeln hatte, hat diese Situation die Form eines „ideologischen Krieges” angenommen, in dem jedes Element „eine Hauptrolle” gespielt hat. In diesem Kontext muss man den Versuch der Erschaffung eines neuen, alternativen zu dem traditionellen, und zwar weltlichen Brauchtum erforschen.
Diese Abhandlung kommt mutig ins bisher unbekannte, von der totalitären Propaganda ideologisch beschworene Gebiet. 45 Jahre der grausamen Propaganda sind für die Katholiken eine eigenartige Herausforderung. Die Bräuche schaden den Sakramenten nicht, sie prägen sie deutlich aus. Zeichen, Symbole, Wörter, Gesten, die durch die Ideologen und durch „Ingenieure der Seelen” abgewertet und verspottet wurden, muss man analisieren und von dem ideologischen Illusionismus entlasten.
