Anhand der Gebetbücher und liturgischer Handbücher, die in den polnisch-sprachigen Ländern im XIX Jahrh. erschienen sind, können wir nicht nur die traditionelle Art der Teilnahme der Gläubigen an der hl. Messe, aber auch eine ausgeprägte Tendenz zur Teilnahme im Geiste der Liturgie beobachten. Die liturgischen Formen der Teilnahme am hl. Messopfer finden wir in diesen Büchern schon um 1840.
Anfangs hat man die Idee des Mitopferns der Gläubigen betont. In den besprochenen Büchern wird dieses Mitopfern als eine tiefe Veränderung des Menschen und die Nachahmung Christi in seinem Gehorsam und seiner Liebe zu Gott begriffen. Man hat jedoch den dynamischen Charakter dieses Mitopferns übersehen und damit die Notwendigkeit seiner ständigen Entwicklung. Man hat auch das Mitopfern durch den Christen immer nur vertikal begriffen. Es wurde nur mit der Vorbereitung der Messopfergaben und mit den Gebeten nach der Wandlung verbunden. Seit Mitte des XIX Jahrh. begann in den polnischen Gebieten die eucharistische Bewegung, die zum öfteren Empfang der hl. Kommunion führte. Man kann anhand der Gebetbücher die Pfade der Erziehung in dieser Hinsicht beobachten. Allen, die öfter die hl. Kommunion empfangen wollten, stellte man sehr hohe, manchmal zu hohe Forderungen. Der Empfang der hl. Kommunion wurde deswegen in Kategorien grosser Ehrfurcht und sogar der Angst erlebt. Dies hatte zu folge, dass man die hl. Kommunion damals mehr mit dem Sakrament der Busse, als mit dem Messopfer selbst verbunden glaubte. Die Eucharistie wurde erlebt als Kommunion mit Christus, aber nicht als Kommunion mit der ganzen Kirche. Dies führte auch zur Einführung der feierlichen Erstkommunion der Kinder, die bei uns seit Mitte des XIX Jahrh. bekannt ist.
Die rege Verlagstätigkeit, die sich in dieser Zeit entwickelt hatte, führte zur Herausgabe zahlreicher Gebetbücher. Sie hatten grossen positiven Einfluss auf das religiöse Leben und insbesondere auf die Teilnahme der Gläubigen und der hl. Messe. Dem ist es im grossen Teil zu verdanken, dass das polnische Volk, dessen kulturelle Entwicklung durch die politische Versklavung gehindert war, an der Erneuerung der Liturgie in der ganzen Kirche teilnehmen konnte.
