Les livres de prières qui étaient en usage en Haute-Silésie jusqu'en 1914 renferment différentes prières destinées à aider les fidèles à assister à la Sainte Messe. Comme le latin dont se servait le prêtre pour célébrer la Messe était inintelligible pour les fidèles, on s'est efforcé de remplacer les textes liturgiques latins par des traductions en langue nationale. Les formes les plus anciennes de ces prières sont des commentaires allégoriques ou symboliques du Sacrifice de la Messe, modelés sur les commentaires d'Amalarius de Metz (vers l'an 850). Les livres de prières dont il est question dans cet article offrent aux fidèles des méditations soit sur l'oeuvre entière de la Rédemption (l'attente du Messie incluse), sur la Passion de Notre Seigneur en particulier, soit sur les souffrances du Coeur de Jésus. Dans la suite, on a paraphrasé ces prières pour rendre les textes liturgiques plus compréhensibles aux fidèles. Ces paraphrases ont souvent été ajoutées aux allégories ou aux traductions littérales des textes de la Messe. Les compilateurs des livres de prières ne mentionnent que très rarement le nom de l'auteur de ces paraphrases. La meilleure méthode d'assister à la Messe, d'après ces livres de prières, consiste à réciter les prières de la Messe traduites littéralement, étant donné qu'elles permettent aux assistants de mieux participer aux prières du célébrant. Dans ces traductions on trouve parfois les paroles de la consécration traduites en langue nationale, ce qui était en contradiction avec les prescriptions du Saint-Siège, qui interdisait toute traduction en langue nationale des paroles de la Consécration. Les prières de Communion — prières préparatoires et action de grâces — ont été traitées séparément. Elles ont une place à part, en dehors des prières de la Messe. Les livres de prières de la Haute Silésie renferment, en outre, une quantité considérable de cantiques que l'on chantait pendant la Sainte Messe. (Dans ce travail, il n'en a été parlé qu'en passant).
Le présent article ne constitue qu'un essai. Il doit servir, dans la suite, à préparer de nouvelles analyses des matériaux contenus dans les livres de prières de la Haute Silésie en usage jusqu'en 1914.
