SPIRITUAL SUFFERING OF MESSIAH IN THE GOSPEL OF SAINT JOHN

Beata Urbanek Logo ORCID

Abstract

The author of the Fourth Gospel wants his readers to believe in Jesus as Messiah and Son of God. As the former one, Jesus fulfills prophetic announcements not only as a King and Judge but also as a suffering servant of YHWH. The article deals with the spiritual aspect of the suffering of Christ during his public activity. There are two main verbs that carry the connotation of that kind of pain: “to hate” (miseō) and “to trouble, to upset” (tarassō) used in the passive form. The Messiah is the object of the world’s hatred and experiences deep emotional agony when faced with the coming hour of his death.
