Im Artikel wird das von J. Werbick ausgearbeitete Verständnis der metaphorischen Rede in der Theologie dargestellt. Es wird von den Aporien der begrifflichen Rede ausgegangen und dann der Grundduktus der Argumentation von Werbick für die Anerkennung der Metaphernsprache in der Theologie als der eigentlichen und nicht „bloß bildlichen” Redeweise dargelegt. Dies wird mit ergänzenden Themenkreisen beleuchtet und präzisiert, die aus den wahrscheinlich dringlichsten Fragen zu diesem Konzept entstehen: Zuerst ist das die Verhältnisbestimmung der so verstandenen Metaphorik zur aristotelischen Rede von der Metapher und im besonderen zur Analogie. Dann wird auf die Frage eingegangen, der Werbick viel Aufmerksamkeit schenkt, und zwar ob die vieldeutige Aussage der Metapher nicht die Eindeutigkeit des Glaubens gefährdet. Letztlich wird das Problem der möglichen psychologisierenden Reduktion von Offenbarung und Erlösung im derartigen Konzept behandelt. Hier wird hauptsächlich auf Werbicks Auseinandersetzung mit Drewermann hingewiesen, wo gezeigt wird, dass die Metaphern als Ausdrucksweisen des geschichtlichen Heilshandelns Gottes dienen. Die Frucht des ausgearbeiteten Metaphernverständnisses zeigt sich in den dogmatischen Veröffentlichungen Werbicks. Im Artikel wird auf seine Soteriologie eingegangen, um an diesem Beispiel zu zeigen, wie die Metaphorik als die eigentliche theologische Sprache zum besseren Begreifen der Erlösung beiträgt. Am Schluss wird im Rahmen eines Kritikversuches die Frage behandelt, ob der biblische Bericht von der Neuheit des Lebens der Erlösten in der Metaphernsprache genügend ernst genommen wird. Damit verbunden ist die weitere Frage, ob die Metaphernsprache es vermag, die radikale Heilsbedürftigkeit des Menschen und die Autonomie des Heilshandelns Gottes deutlich auszudrücken, ob – in Folge – die Absolutheit der Heilsvermittlung in Christus zur Sprache kommt. Es scheint, dass in diesen Zusammenhängen die analogia entis als die eigentliche (gegenüber den Metaphern präzisierende) Sprache der Theologie unumgänglich ist.
