Der industrielle Charakter von Oberschlesien entschied darüber, dass die mit dem Schutz der Arbeitsrechte verbundenen Probleme schon seit dem Ende des XIX Jahrhunderts auf diesem Gebiet als einige der wichtigsten galten. Sie wurden auch von den katholischen Geistlichen aufgenommen und entsprachen der sozialen Kirchenlehre.
Infolgedessen, schon in den 70er Jahren des XIX Jahrhunderts engagierten sich die Priester sehr oft für die Bildung der ersten die Arbeitsrechte zu schützenden Organisationen, aus denen weiter klassische Gewerkschaften entstanden. Hier wurden Methoden eingesetzt, die in anderen Teilen Deutschlands von den Zentrumsparteifunktionären ausgearbeitet wurden. Die erste derartige Organisation war die Gesellschaft für Gegenseitige Arbeiterhilfe in Oberschlesien, die 1874 gegründet wurde. Die wichtigste Bedeutung erlangte jedoch die Gewerkschaft für Gegenseitige Hilfe der Christlichen Oberschlesienarbeiter. Sie entstand im Jahre 1889, und bedeutende Verdienste für ihre Gründung hatten besonders Priester Stanisław Radziejowski und Adam Napieralski. Diese Organisation, wie alle unter dem Patronat der christlichen Kirche funktionierenden Organisationen, förderte das solidarische Programm, indem sie den revolutionären Kampf ausschloss. Die Geistlichen hatten auch ihren großen Anteil an der Bearbeitung der ideellen Prinzipen für die schon typische Gewerkschaft, zu der die 1902 gegründete Polnische Berufsvereinigung zählte. Im Zeitraum zwischen zwei Weltkriegen nahm die Bedeutung der christlichen Gewerkschaften zu. Zu den größten Gewerkschaften jener Zeit gehörten die Christliche Gewerkschaft, die infolge der Spaltung in ZZP 1923 gegründet wurde, sowie die nach dem Maiumbruch entstandene Vereinigung der Christlichen Gewerkschaften. In Schlesien waren auch deutsche christliche Gewerkschaften tätig. Der Zweite Krieg und die Nachkriegsjahre waren für die normale Tätigkeit derartigen Organisationen nicht günstig. Ihre Wiedergeburt ist jedoch heutzutage zu bemerken.
