Dès 1974 on fait à l'Académie de Théologie Catholique les recherches sur les élèves des écoles secondaires et de la VIII-ème classe des écoles primaires pour élaborer un modèle nouveau de la catéchèse.
On a examiné 1316 personnes, garçons et filles, à l'aide des tests, des enquêtes et des sondages. Il s'est avéré que les jeunes s'interessent très peu aux sujets concernant directement Dieu ou relations avec Lui (en moyenne 7%, dans les écoles de profession seulement 0,5%).
Beaucoup plus d'intérêt éveillent les problèmes qui se dirigent vers les valeurs humaines comme p.ex. le bonheur dans la vie, les contacts sociaux, le travail, le métier (en moyenne 52%) ou les problèmes liés au domaine religieux mais sans rapport à l'engagement personnel, p.ex. l'Eglise comme institution, la foi et la science, les religions du monde (en moyenne 41%).
Les résultats de ces recherches ressemblent à celles faites en R.F.A. Comment pourrait-on former un modèle de la catéchèse répondant aux besoins des jeunes contemporains?
Pour la base de ce modèle on a commencé en 1963 un expériment catéchétique qui dure jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
L'objet de cet expériment constituent deux groupes de jeunes: un dirigé avec les méthodes plutôt scolaires et le second — autrement.
Comme le point de départ pour la catéchèse dans le second groupe ont servi les intérêts des jeunes, librement exprimés, et non le programme officiel.
Les problèmes, proposés par les jeunes eux-mêmes, augmentaient peu à peu de valeur et de profondeur; enfin les élèves se sont engagés si serieusement qu'ils ont postulé pour eux un neo-catéchumenat biblique.
Le degré de l'intérêt et de l'engagement religieux chez les membres du groupe premier („scolaire”) était beaucoup plus faible.
En concluant, on peut préciser une voie d'un modèle de catéchèse qui fait naître des recherches expérimentales: il faut commencer par besoins des jeunes jusqu'au réveil du désir de la connaissance systématique de Dieu par sa Parole dans les cadres neocatechumenales.
