Dora Gabe’s Notion of Literary Translation and its Reflection in
Her Letters to Anna Kamieńska

Adriana Kowaczewa

Abstract

Dora Gabe’s concept of translation as a product and creative practice was formed by her cooperation with one of the most prominent Bulgarian scholars – Boyan Penev. Later on, after Penev’s death, the poetess has changed and modified her understanding of the process of translation significantly. In this article the author claims that a corporeal experience of the process of translation, spontaneity and a consciously recognized need to cooperate with the author are the most important characteristics of Gabe’s own translational project. Gabe’s longlasting correspondence with Anna Kamieńska shows all those characteristics and proves that in the late period of Gabe’s work translation was a way to establish a feeling of communion and transgress her cultural and artistic identity.
