Conversations about Wisława Szymborska’s Poems in the Context of the New Humanities

Abstract

The article seeks a way to interest students in poetry by finding in it problems important to the teenage generation. Selected poems by Wisława Szymborska are shown as a medium that can provoke in-depth reflection on problems of keen interest to teenagers. Ways of discussing the Nobel Prize winner’s works in the context of such issues as empathy, propaganda, and ecology are shown, and it is suggested that many questions can be posed by reaching for this poetry.

Ewa Jaskółowa – professor emerita of the University of Silesia in Katowice. Her research interests focus on historical and theoretical literary issues, school teaching, and glottodidactics. The subject of her research has been 20th-century literature, especially poetry, in dialogue with the Romantic and ancient tradition. In her books, she shows the possibilities of using various literary methodologies in teaching literature. She is the author of books on the poetry of the 20th century (e.g., Poetyckie podróże Stanisława Balińskiego, 1988 [Poetic
Journeys of Stanisław Baliński]; Od poezji kosmosu do poezji czasu. Studium o twórczości Stanisława Ciesielczuka [From the Poetry of Space to the Poetry of Time. Study on the Works of Stanisław Ciesielczuk], 1997; „Kto to jest”. Motyw żony Lota w polskiej poezji XX wieku, czyli rozbijanie stereotypu [Who It Is. The Motif of Lot's Wife in Polish Poetry of the 20th Century, or Breaking the Stereotype], 2006), books and articles discussing the problems of teaching poetry at school (e.g., Dialog z tradycją, czyli o poezji w szkole i na maturze [Dialogue with Tradition, or on Poetry at School and Final Exams], 1997; together with z A. Opacka: Prądy i konwencje w prozie [Trends and Conventions in Prose], 1995 and Prądy i konwencje w poezji [Trends and Conventions in Poetry], 1995), over a hundred articles on the work of 20th century poets, co-author of a series of textbooks for secondary schools (Świat do przeczytania [A World to Read]). She has organized many conferences that inspired reflection on contemporary methodologies in literary studies and their translation into school teaching. The fruits of these conferences are the collections Nowe odsłony klasyki w szkole. Literatura XIX wieku [New Versions of Classics at School. 19th-century Literature] 2013), Fundamenty czy fundamentalizmy? Antyk grecko-rzymski i Biblia w szkole [Foundations or Fundamentalisms? Greco-Roman Antiquity and the Bible at School] (2015). She lectured on the methodology of teaching Polish as a first and second language at teacher programs abroad. In 2004–2007, she was the head of the international Slavic Network grant, the idea of which was to demonstrate the possibilities of parallel teaching of Slavic languages.
