Abstract

The context of considerations includes alarming data presented in the reports of natural scientists showing so called planetary boundaries. The data shows that we are on the verge of probable destabilization of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. These are being discussed within a debate on the Anthropocene – the human epoch. The article, facing these unprecedented challenges, in line with the broader postulate of socializing a discussion on the Anthropocene, asks a question on how to reflect on justice. Theoretical ambitions of the text are limited as its aim is a preliminary analysis of the problem of justice in selected contexts, in light of particular challenges of the planetary environmental crisis in the 21st century. The following article underlines the advantages of the systemic thinking on justice, as well as points out that it involves many other problems of irreversibility, progress, equality, responsibility, guilt or intergenerational rights. Additionally, the text presents selected difficulties in reflection on justice, among others, on the example of incorrect assumptions of the planetary boundaries model. The article shows that humanistic sensitivity, especially in fields such as ecological economy is necessary to avoid such mistakes in the future.

The researcher deals with the philosophical assumptions in a discussion on the Anthropocene and ecological economy of degrowth. She is a member of the Council of Experts of the Climate Coalition and Council of the Climate Education Foundation, an author of Socjologia wiedzy w Biblii [Sociology of Knowledge in the Bible] (Kraków 2003), Obraz, który nas zniewala [An image that captivates us] (Kraków 2007), Technonauka w społeczeństwie ryzyka [Technoscience in a risk society] (Toruń 2012), and Epoka człowieka. Retoryka i marazm antropocenu [The epoch of man] (Warszawa 2018) which has been translated into Russian (Moscow 2012),
and Ukrainian (Warsaw 2023). The latest book in press is Uspołecznianie antropocenu. Ekowerwa i ekonomia ekologiczna dewzrostu [Socializing the Anthropocene, Eco-verve and the ecological economy of degrowth] (Toruń 2023).
