Abstract

Certainly Polish cinematographers are the biggest stars among Polish film artists in the world firmament. They were the ones who built the reputation of Polish filmmakers in Hollywood already in the 1960s and paved the way for their younger colleagues. “Some time ago, Jack Nicholson half-jokingly, half-seriously claimed that he could not imagine a well-photographed film without the participation of Poles. The talent, skills and resourcefulness of our cinematographers have earned them the admiration of Hollywood directors and producers and recognition around the world” (Top 10…, 2013). However, relatively few Poles are still aware of the fact that the people in question took part in the production of the world’s greatest hits - films that are loved by audiences around the globe, earn billions of dollars and win prestigious awards at the world’s largest festivals. The author of the article lists the names of those without whom the world cinema would not be the same. The characters of the text are: Dariusz Wolski, Sławomir Idziak, Janusz Kamiński, Andrzej Sekuła and Łukasz Bielan. Such important names as Adam Holender, Łukasz Żal, Alexander Gruszynski and Andrzej Bartkowiak are also mentioned.

AGNIESZKA TAMBOR – PhD, Institute of Cultural Sciences, University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland
Conducts research on film, glottodidactics and culture. For many years she has been cooperating with the School of Polish Language and Culture. She is a lecturer at Postgraduate Qualification Studies in Teaching Polish Culture and Polish as a Foreign Language (Polish, foreign and online editions) and Postgraduate Regional Studies. She conducts media education training for ORPEG, the Political Criticism Club and other institutions. She is an author and manager of international projects promoting the Polish language and culture: With Polish Cinema into the World, 100 Ecofacts that Every Learner of Polish Should Talk About, Language Competence – Task Innovation, Spoken Poland, Spread your Wings Like an Eagle, 100 Facts from the Polish History that Every Foreigner Should Know (www.100faktowzhistorii.pl). She is a Polish film promotor – she took part, among others, at Polish Days in Prešov and Shenyang, in cultural events in
Beijing, Curitiba, and Jakarta – everywhere trying to increase knowledge about Polish cinema. For many years she has conducted entrance exams in Polish for candidates wanting to study at the University of Silesia. She has conducted workshops for teachers abroad, including the United States, Brazil, Canada, Kazakhstan and China. Her publications also include didactic games (e.g. Ekomemory [Ecomemory], and numerous textbooks such as Nowa polska półka filmowa. 100 filmów, które każdy cudzoziemiec zobaczyć powinien [A New Polish Film Shelf.
