Abstrakt

Ogrody zoologiczne to przestrzenie interakcji między ludźmi a zwierzętami. Uważa się, że zapewniają ludziom ograniczony kontakt z dziką przyrodą i dają przebłysk wrodzonej wspaniałości królestwa zwierząt. Pojawiają się jednak pytania dotyczące stopnia, w jakim zwierzęta są faktycznie widoczne w tych środowiskach. Skłania to nas do refleksji nad kluczowym pytaniem: czy zamknięte zwierzę miejskie, oddzielone od swojego naturalnego środowiska, może naprawdę zagwarantować zrozumienie naturalnego stanu gatunku, zachowując jednocześnie jego podmiotowość? Randy Malamud, Bob Mullan i Garry Marvin dokonują krytycznej oceny sposobu przedstawiania zwierząt trzymanych w niewoli w ogrodach zoologicznych, a także badają obecność kultury ogrodów zoologicznych w społeczeństwach miejskich. Bierna obserwacja zwierząt w zoo sprowadza je do zwykłych eksponatów służących celom rozrywkowym, zamiast pozwolić nam naprawdę docenić je takimi, jakie są. W artykule wykorzystano koncepcję biowładzy Foucaulta w celu interpretacji powieści Sen Hannah autorstwa Diane Hammond jako narracji o zoo, w której Hannah jawi się jako odbiorca biowładzy kształtującej jej poczucie siebie w podwójnej roli: zwierzęcia do towarzystwa i zwierzęcia w zoo. Główne badanie koncentruje się na sprawdzeniu, w jaki sposób tożsamość Hannah jest konstruowana przez antropocentryczny dyskurs dominacji i kontroli nad zwierzętami.

Smriti Singh jest profesorem języka angielskiego na Wydziale Nauk Humanistycznych i Społecznych Indyjskiego Instytutu Technologii Patna w Indiach. Jej obszary badań i nauczania obejmują pisma indyjskie w języku angielskim, teorię literatury oraz ELT. Była beneficjentką programu Fulbrighta na Uniwersytecie Teksańskim w Austin.
