ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Journal scope and coverage

Published twice a year, Zoophilologica. Polish Journal of Animal Studies is an online academic journal that aims at interdisciplinary research on the meanings we ascribe to animals. The way knowledge in this area is negotiated and the reconstruction of areas crucial for thinking about the world of animals and humans demand an environment for the exchange of ideas that cannot be accommodated within a single discipline. The journal constitutes a forum of expression for specialists in zoology and history of science as well as theoreticians of culture and cultural historians. One of its founding principles is that the perspective of Animal Studies constitutes a bridge between questions of worldview and those of cultural transformations occurring in the realm of human-animal relations. This has already been confirmed by a variety of English-language studies; this journal aims to reflect on human-animal relations in Central and Eastern European countries as well as other cultural areas. The proposed perspective reveals hitherto unexplored transformations of cultural and moral models prevalent in the latest discussions within ecologically-oriented humanities and posthumanities.

Apart from publishing articles on zoophilology as a new discipline of knowledge, this specialist online journal has been launched to meet contemporary expectations and assumptions placed on representatives of animal studies by so-called “third culture” within the field of Animal Studies, including biohumanities and ecoposthumanism. Zoophilologica is situated within the field of fast developing novel disciplines thriving under the label of “zoo,” i.e. zoopoetics, zoosemiotics, zooanthropology, zootheology, zoomusicology, zooethnology and even zoopharmacognosy, but also other new and related research directions, such as ecocriticcism, ecolinguistics,s or geopoetics.
