Submissions

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word (*.doc, *.docx), Open Office, or RTF document file format.
  • Summaries in Polish, Russian and English (as well as titles and five key words) have been prepared which shall be later placed in their designated position.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines (see below).
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The submitted text does not contain any elements that would allow its author to be identified.
  • The journal’s editors request that until the publication of submitted scientific and review articles, as well as reports, reviews, and notes on books, no fragments thereof be made public – even in non-peer-reviewed materials, including interviews and websites.

Author Guidelines

Authors can submit previously unpublished texts via the OJS system (from 2021 on we no longer accept articles submitted via email).

The guidelines for preparing text in Polish for publication are available on the Polish version of the website (change of language in the upper right-hand corner of the website).

The guidelines for preparing text in Russian for publication are available on the Russian version of the website (change of language in the upper right-hand corner of the website).

 

The guidelines for preparing text in English

  1. The submitted text should be anonymized; that is, all the data allowing for the identification of the author should be removed from the article’s main text, notes, and file properties (option: Properties → Details).
  2. The manuscript should not exceed 40000 characters incl. spaces; this also includes footnotes, bibliography, tables, and summaries.
  3. Text formatting:
  • article title – centered, bold type, font type: Times New Roman, font size: 14;
  • text of the article – font type: Times New Roman, font size: 12, spacing: 1,5;
  • paragraph indent: 1 cm (use the automatic Paragraph formatting function of your word processing program, do NOT use the tab and/or space keys);
  • no double spacing between paragraphs;
  • margins – 2,5 cm on each side;
  • pages numbered in the bottom right-hand corner (option: Insert →Page number;
  • for texts to be set in columns, use tables with invisible borders (do NOT use the Column option).
  1. Bellow the article title:
  • insert a 100-120 word abstract in Polish and five key words in Polish;
  • for texts in Polish insert: article title and keywords in English and Russian,
  • for texts in Russian insert article title and keywords in English and Polish,
  • for articles in English insert article title and keywords in Polish and Russian;
  • translations of article titles and keywords should be written in Times New Roman 10, spacing – 1.
  1. Quotes shorter than 3 lines are to be quoted in the main text in inverted commas, straight type.
  2. Quotes longer than three lines should be in blockquote, left indent:1 cm, font: Times New Roman 11, spacing: 1.
  3. To shorten a quote (when extracting a fragment) use an ellipsis (Ctr + Alt + dot; on a numeric keyboard: Alt + 0133) in square brackets; an ellipsis is a separate punctuation mark (do NOT use three dots).
  4. In the main text, when a surname is used for the first time, it is to be used with the full given name.
  5. The main text should be followed by bibliography (bibliographic entries should follow the model given below).
  6. For the graphic material to be included in the submitted text the minimum resolution is 300 dpi; the appropriately described graphics should be sent in separate file(s) (NOT pasted onto the Word manuscript); all graphics must be supplied with appropriate written licenses for print and online use, issued by the copyright owner or, in the case of open-license or owned materials, a declaration concerning the type of the license and the source of the graphics.
  7. The file should be titled as follows: text-[title of article].

NOTES

  1. Article should be provided with footnotes with continuous numbering for the whole text (option: References → Insert footnote); it is not advisable to provide titles or section titles with footnotes referencing an earlier publication of the material, the delivery of a conference paper, or research funding).
  2. Surnames of authors or editors should NOT be spaced-out, written in small caps or capital letters.
  3. In the bibliographic note the authors’ surnames should be accompanied by the full version of their given names (do not use initials).
  4. Bibliographic notes of self-standing publications should include information about the publisher.
  5. Editorially dependent publications (articles in periodicals and in collective works) should be supplied with the page reference.
  6. In bibliographic notes, the titles of editorially dependent publications (articles) should be written in simple font and included in inverted commas; titles of self-standing publications and periodicals should be written in italics.
  7. For more than four authors, write the surname and the given name of the first one and replace the remaining authors by “et al.” (in bibliography: for eleven and more authors write the surname and the given name of the first oner and replace the remaining authors by “et al.”).
  8. In footnotes, do not use “Ibid., op cit., loc. cit., idem, eadem”.
  9. For English titles, subtitles (including subtitles following the semicolon), titles of chapters, and titles of subchapters the first letters of every word must start with a capital letter, with the exception of:
  • articles (a, an, the);
  • prepositions (against, as, between, in, of, on, to);
  • coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, neither/nor, either/or, so, yet);
  • to in infinitive phrases (e.g.: When to Leave).

The shortened version of the title should include the key word(s); the initial a, an, the should be omitted; the word order should not be changed (for example, A Sportsman’s Sketches will be shortened to Sportsman’s Sketches; What We Talk About When We Talk About Love can be shortened to What We Talk About or Talk About Love); the shortened title should not be followed by the elision mark; titles consisting of up to four words will rarely be shortened.
  2. In the main text, commas, full stops, exclamation marks, question marks, and ellipses are to be placed before the closing quotation mark; semicolons and colons (; / :) are to be placed after the closing quotation mark.
  3. If a DOI has been assigned to a publication, it must be provided in the footnotes; the DOI should be in the form of an active hyperlink to be placed at the end of the publication’s description, e.g.:

  2. Bibliographic entries are to be put in alphabetical order; do not use numbers for bibliographic entries.
  3. Bibliographic entries written in the Cyrillic alphabet should be transliterated; we recommend using the internet service available here: https://www.ushuaia.pl/transliterate, the choice for the transliteration is: Russian (English transcription BGN/PCGN); the transliterated entry should be put first, followed by the Cyrillic version in square brackets.
  4. Entries written originally in the Latin alphabet (Polish, English, etc.) should not be transliterated to the Cyrillic.
  5. Bibliography should include the whole literature quoted in the text.
  6. Bibliographic entries should include information about the publisher.
  7. Bibliographic entries for articles in periodicals or monographs should be supplied with the page reference.
  8. For eleven and more authors, the surname and the given name of the first author should be used and the remaining names replaced by “et al.”
