Abstract

In his novel entitled Beethoven’s Timpani, Michał Choromański made absence central category. It refers to absent persons, lost items and belongings, and the elusiveness of meaning. The narrative underscores the said category many a time in a self-referential manner, for instance, by using in various contexts a seemingly unattractive metaphor – “the hole.” Presence and absence in Choromański’s novel are not oppose in a binary fashion, but they interpenetrate. Beethoven’s Timpani is, therefore, both a crime novel and not quite, the protagonist Janek is and is not a pianist. The traces in the text elude the reader freely, by postponing or even nullifying the possibility of attaining a convincing interpretation. Beethoven’s Timpani, in whose depicted world events and claims are presented only to be subsequently dismantled, may serve as an exemplification of deconstructionism in literature. The present article’s aim is an inquiry into Choromański’s efforts to underscore the category of absence and the meaning postponement, and pointing to those efforts’ similarity to some of deconstructionist tenets. What deserve an utmost attention is the eponymous motif of Beethoven’s timpani (otherwise deserves kettledrums), which in the novel triggers the error/mistake mechanism akin to Derridean différance.

Abstract

The paper analyses the novel by Heinz Strunk Der Goldene Handschuh [The Golden Glove] against Judith Butler’s comments on Excitable Speech. Alongside the presentation of violence through language, language as a form of violence is brought into focus. The first level of analysis is constructed around the investigation of utterances and internal focalization of the character of Fritz Honka. The second level encompasses the intersubjective structure of description as a dialogic interdependence between various characters. Finally, the narration itself as a form of reported speech is critically investigated. The following hypothesis is being explored: the asynchronous speech of the characters remains inexplicit on the textual level, which evokes the described principle of hurtful speech. The expression of violence at the level of the characters is transformed into the language of violence at the narrative level. The aim of the contribution is therefore to present the narration within a critical framework allowing for evoking of the awareness of the interrelationships between language and violence.

The paper deals with selected religious theoretical, autobiographic, and literary texts by Lou Andreas-Salomé and proposes that their ideological content, as well as the author’s biography, were shaped by the tension between the concepts of piety viewed nowadays as archaic, and the early modernist life-reform movement (Lebensreformbewegung). Lou Andreas-Salomé‘s religious theoretical essays, but also her letters and autobiographic notes are taken into consideration to trace the origin of the author’s image of God and her autonomously and free-willingly constructed form of life. The paper presents the shift from the ‘old’ prominence of God and the new metaphysical prominence of ‘Life’, characteristic both for the literature and for the ideology of Lebensreformbewegung.
Subsequently, the paper focuses on Andreas-Salomé‘s short story Ródinka. Russsische Erinnerung (1923), viewed as a literary embodiment of her theoretical reflections, in which the ideas of piety and life reform clash. It is also shown to what extent these thematic motifs are narratologically founded by the author.

Abstract

Critics are often caricatured on stage, in movies and in drawings. One of the first examples are the viewer comments in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Caricatures are also found in Arsen und Spitzenhäubchen [Arsenic and Old Lace] and the computer-animated film Ratatouille. The claim that theatre criticism began with the publication of Lessing’s Hamburgischer Dramaturgie must be rejected. Without theatre criticism, neither the ancient playwright competitions nor Aristotle’s Poetics are thinkable. From a purely stylistic perspective, theatre criticism is very heavily inclined towards orality, especially with Ludwig Börne, Theodor Fontane, Alfred Kerr and Friedrich Luft. Kerr’s claim that criticism should be considered the fourth major literary genre next to epic, drama, and poetry, served the purpose of self-establishment; other critics do not share this point of view. In the context of media, contemporary theatre critics are faced with new challenges: on the one hand, the pressure to be up to date has risen sharply as a result of online competition, on the other hand the formal diversity (post-dramatic theatre, post-migrant theatre, site-specific theatre, research projects, deconstruction of traditional themes, etc.) constantly demands new positions to be taken.

The article focuses on selected quotes taken from the business press of the late 19th and 20th centuries, vocabulary examples from business articles from the years 1885–1886 and 1993–1996, which describe the period of the upswing and later the period of the emerging crisis. They are defined and explained with the help of business dictionaries. The aim is to show how the language of business, especially in the area of trade, developed and changed over a period of around 100 years. The grouping of the vocabulary is intended to give a better overview of the topics covered by the business press. The linguistic benefit of the work lies, as hoped, in a contribution to the diachronic description of the lexicon of the language of business. A comparison with the 20th century shows how the language of the economy developed in the selected area, which words have come out of use, which have been affected by a shift in meaning, and which have remained unchanged to this day.

Due to ongoing immigration in the last few decades, the composition of the population in Germany has changed significantly. The country has gained new citizens and with them came also new linguistic wealth. The importance of the new migration-related linguistic diversity and how the multilingual resources can or should be developed, especially in the school context, are topics of heated debate. In the native language lessons, the pupils’ first languages should be developed and expanded into functional varieties. The aim of the present article is to show how multilingualism is promoted in the context of Russian and Polish language teaching, and what challenges and potentials this type of teaching brings with it.

Erich Maria Remarque-Friedenszentrum has existed since 1997, although its activity in the new building was preceded by the creation of a documentary center at the University of Osnabrück (1985), and a few years later by the archives. The aim of these activities was to commemorate the writer E. M. Remarque born in Osnabrück, collect materials about his life and works and popularize his literary legacy. For thirty years, the center has expanded the scope of its activity considerably, becoming not only an archive, but also a research, educational and publishing facility. The approaching jubilees – the 50th anniversary of the writer’s death and the 125th birthday – incline one to summarize, reflect on the history of the center’s creation and development, and to pose a question about the tasks and possibilities for the future.
