Semantic and Syntactic Studies of the Romance Languages

Volume 24 of Neophilologica brings together a wide range of contributions devoted to the semantic, syntactic, and discourse-related aspects of Romance languages, with a particular focus on Spanish examined from contrastive and interdisciplinary perspectives. The articles collected in this issue reflect the diversity of current linguistic research, combining approaches from lexical and cognitive semantics, discourse analysis, contrastive linguistics, translation studies, and language pedagogy.

A first thematic strand concerns the conceptual representation of emotions and experiential domains in language. Joanna Adamiczka investigates the linguistic conceptualization of joy in “La imagen conceptual de la alegría reflejada en los fraseologismos españoles y polacos,” analysing phraseological expressions in Spanish and Polish. Related perspectives on emotion are offered by Agata Gołąb in “Conceptualización del miedo en el registro coloquial del español,” which explores the conceptualization of fear in colloquial Spanish, and by Aleksandra Gajos in “Diversos escenarios de las emociones del grupo IRA,” focusing on discursive scenarios of anger.

A second group of contributions addresses grammatical structures and syntactic phenomena, often within a contrastive framework. Janusz Bień examines nominal and verbal tendencies in “Tendencias nominales y verbales en la lengua. Estudio contrastivo hispano-polaco.” Jadwiga Linde-Usiekniewicz discusses the structure of relative constructions in “Acerca de las oraciones pseudorrelativas y oraciones relativas de varios tipos,” while Wiaczesław Nowikow analyses the grammatical value of Spanish past tenses in “Sobre el valor gramatical de los tiempos canté y cantaba y su empleo en contextos de [± delimitación temporal].”

Discourse and pragmatic studies constitute another central dimension of the volume. Marek Baran addresses the interactional functions of discourse markers in “Acerca de la recategorización interaccional de los marcadores discursivos.” Agnieszka Grzywna examines the role of discourse connectors in political communication in “El discurso político y los conectores. Sobre el papel de los marcadores discursivos,” while Sabina Deditius analyses metaphor as a persuasive strategy in “La metáfora como mecanismo de persuasión en el discurso coloquial de los raperos.”

Several articles further explore phraseology, lexicology, and historical aspects of vocabulary. Monika Lisowska discusses denigrating vocabulary in “Sobre el insulto y el léxico denigratorio,” while Ewa Stala studies the historical development of Spanish etymological doublets in “Dobletes etimológicos en el español 1611–1739.” Cultural dimensions of Spanish phraseology are examined by Agnieszka Szyndler in “La diversidad dentro de la unidad: los aspectos culturales de la fraseología hispana.”

Finally, the volume also addresses translation, linguistic contact, and language teaching. Iwona Kasperska explores intercultural translation in “¿Cómo explicar el Nuevo Mundo al receptor polaco contemporáneo? Traducción interlingual e intercultural en las crónicas de la Conquista.” Joanna Kudełko focuses on the translation of cultural elements in tourism texts, while Tomasz Sobański investigates the acquisition of Spanish intonation patterns by Polish learners in “Adquisición de los patrones entonativos españoles por los alumnos polacos de ELE.”
