The journal of Romance studies Neophilologica was founded in the late nineteen-seventies at the initiative of Professor Stanisław Karolak, founder of Romance studies in Silesia. For many years head of the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of Silesia, he also established a research school grounded in predicate-argument structures, which remains to this day a hallmark of our research centre at both national and international level.

Sustained international cooperation and the pursuit of various projects involving scholars from across Europe, under the supervision of Professor Karolak, gave rise to numerous conferences and scholarly meetings, creating the need for a linguistics journal that would serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas and discussion around jointly conducted projects, as well as for the broader dissemination of scientific work. It was in this context that the first issue of the journal appeared in 1980. Published on a biennial basis until 2007, the journal has since been issued on a regular annual basis.

Aims and scope

Neophilologica is a scholarly journal devoted to linguistics, with a particular focus on Romance linguistics and general linguistics. It welcomes a wide range of methodologies and approaches, including theoretical, descriptive, applied and comparative linguistics. It also encourages studies dealing with a single language, preferably, though not exclusively, from the Romance family.

The scope of the journal is not confined to any particular linguistic approach, making it a versatile platform for researchers to disseminate their findings. It thus bridges the gap between different linguistic disciplines and fosters a thorough understanding of language phenomena. This openness to diverse methodologies reflects the journal's commitment to pluralism in linguistic research.

Neophilologica's commitment to embracing a broad spectrum of methodologies is rooted in the conviction that "there is nothing more practical than a good theory," thereby underscoring the importance of theoretical frameworks that make it possible to identify, formulate and explain the underlying rules and principles of language through observation and generalisation.

Each issue is organised around a specific theme, which serves as its main thread. The remainder of the volume is devoted to other research topics.

The languages of publication are French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English.

Neophilologica is a journal whose primary version of record is the electronic (online) edition. The complete volume is published online in full open access at the end of November each year, and individual accepted articles appear on the journal's website as they are copyedited and formatted.
