The aim of this short article is to discuss the state of research in a field which attempts to combine animal studies with theology and religious studies, and to map its discourse, tentatively called “critical ecotheology” and construed as environmental ethics accompanied by a religious inspiration and theological justification which is derived from dogmas and religious attitudes of different world religions. The attempt at providing a theoretical framework for ecotheology was inspired by the pioneering work of scholars who came in September 2014 to Bonn, Germany, for a conference on human-animal relations in religious traditions. The problems brought up by their presentations provoked a discussion of the presence of animals in the thinking, practices, and rituals of various religions and their theologies, highlighting the role of religious culture in negotiating different senses of the animal. The article concludes with the idea that a review of religious and theological issues from the perspective of animal studies may lead to the revision of many concepts and theoretical paradigms within the history and anthropology of religion, while helping to articulate the significance of animals and the need for their protection in the activity of religious groups and individuals.

Reading Jacques Derrida’s essay Che cos’è la poesia? as well as poems by Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas Hardy, and Tadeusz Kijonka, we want to argue that the animal helps us to redefine the human subject. When pondering the fuzzy boundary between the human and the non-human, man interprets himself/herself not as a subject isolated in its sublime aspirations but, rather, as a fragile connection, delicate relation with what begs for his/her protection and care.

The authors analyse the political dialogue regarding wolf protection between pro-nature nongovernmental organizations, hunters and politicians in Poland. Despite strong pressure of hunting lobbies legal status of the wolf has changed significantly, from animal heavily persecuted after Second World War to species strictly protected in whole country since 1998. In 21st century opposition towards wolf protection is fuelled by hunters and politicians connected with them. The analysis shown that strong voice of non-governmental organizations is needed to sustain wolf protection in Poland.

The deputy’s draft bill amendment about the Animal Protection Act submitted to the Marshal of the Sejm in November 2017 was one of the most ambitious attempts in the Third Republic of Poland to improve the legal protection of animals. The loudest proposal in the project was to prohibit the rearing and breeding of animals for the purpose of obtaining fur from them. In the article, the Authors reflect on the reasons for the political failure of this project. In the conditions of such strong centralization of political power, was the resistance from big business really decisive? What political conditions would have to be met for such far-reaching socio-economic changes motivated by public morality and environmental protection? Why this issue aroused so many contradictory emotions in political discourse? What is more important: economic profits based on cruelty to animals or life of sentient, autonomous beings?

Artykuł dotyczy przestępstw zabijania i znęcania się nad zwierzętami w polskim porządku prawnym. Analizowane są przepisy rozporządzenia Prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej z 22 marca 1928 r. oraz ustawy o ochronie zwierząt z 21 sierpnia 1997 r. Omówione zostały kolejno: historia przepisów dotyczących przestępstw przeciwko zwierzętom, przedmiot ochrony przepisów ustawy o ochronie zwierząt wraz z rozważaniami dotyczącymi podmiotowości zwierząt. Rozpatrzono również stronę przedmiotową tytułowych przestępstw, a więc opis przesłanek, dzięki którym możliwe jest zakwalifikowanie danego czynu jako przestępstwa. Poddano analizie również podmiot czynów zabronionych oraz stronę podmiotową w postaci motywacji sprawcy.

An interview with Justyna Szumacher – a traveler who dives (not in a protective cage!) with sharks in various places around the world – aims to show that these fish do not pose such a threat to humans as is commonly believed. Szumacher is considered an expert in diving with sharks in Poland, with extensive theoretical and practical knowledge about the behavior of these fascinating fish in their natural environment. The Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation does not only guarantee respect for human dignity, but it also states that dignity of living beings is to be respected and protected. This article presents the concept of the aforementioned dignity, followed by an indication of the sources of many interpretation problems which can be caused by this neologism. Furthermore, an attempt was made to answer the question, based on an analysis of the Animal Protection Act provisions, whether the recognition under the law that animals have dignity, will translate into their better treatment, guaranteeing them welfare or decent death. The article also shows the position of the Federal Court in relation to the concept of dignity based on the case of giving permission to carry out animal testing.

Zwierzęta należące do różnych grup taksonomicznych traktowane są w badaniach naukowych w bardzo odmienny sposób, bardzo różne są bowiem zakres i powszechność powinności moralnych którymi są one obdarzane. Ptaki, ssaki i głowonogi mają status uprzywilejowany względem pozostałych a ryby zajmują w tej hierarchii stanowisko pośrednie. Ogromna większość obecnych w biosferze zwierząt wciąż pozbawiona jest jakiejkolwiek ochrony podstawowych życiowych interesów. W ostatnich latach empirycznie potwierdzono obecność zaawansowanych funkcji poznawczych u wielu przedstawicieli bezkręgowców. Jednoznacznie nakazuje to porzucenie nawyku traktowania ich jako prymitywnych, niewrażliwych istot, których zachowanie oparte jest wyłącznie na zautomatyzowanych instynktach. Nowe koncepcje etyczne wyznaczają nowy paradygmat w zrozumieniu ich miejsca w sferze moralnych powinności. Szczególne miejsce zdobywa sobie wśród nich koncepcja etyki ewolucyjnie inkluzywnej.

Obserwujemy obecnie szóste, plejstoceńsko-holoceńskie wielkie wymieranie. Jednym z istotnych czynników przyczyniających się do dramatycznego spadku różnorodności dzikiej fauny i flory są zmiany klimatu. Ludzkość podjęła walkę ze zmianami klimatu w 1992 roku, kiedy to w trakcie Szczytu Ziemi w Rio de Janeiro przyjęto Ramową Konwencję Narodów Zjednoczonych w sprawie Zmian Klimatu. Niestety efektów tych wysiłków nie widać. Wzrost emisji gazów cieplarnianych doprowadzi do wymarcia połowy gatunków na Ziemi do końca wieku. Ograniczenie wzrostu temperatury do 2°C (w stosunku do ery przedindustrialnej) do 2100 roku oznaczać będzie zmniejszenie różnorodności gatunkowej o 25%. Naukowcy przestrzegają, że jeśli nie podejmiemy natychmiastowych działań, czeka nas katastrofalna utrata różnorodności biologicznej. Dzikie zwierzęta kręgowe już dzisiaj stanowią zaledwie 4% biomasy wszystkich kręgowców, dramatycznie niewiele w porównaniu z biomasą zwierząt hodowlanych.

Spór o ubój rytualny toczy się od lat, nie tylko w polskim dyskursie. Powszechnie wskazuje się, że praktyka ta jest nieetyczna i nieludzka. Jednak ten spór zupełnie nieuwzględnia żydowskiego podejście do tej kwestii. Żydzi uważają, że jest to najbardziej humanitarna metoda uboju zwierząt i została nakazana przez Boga dla ich ochrony od cierpienia. Podkreślają, że prawo Boże nie może ulec zmianie. Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, że żydowski ubój rytualny jest praktyką etyczną i dopuszczalną na mocy prawa pozytywnego w Polsce. Autor zwraca również uwagę, że dyskusja o dopuszczalności takiego uboju opiera się głównie na argumentach ekonomicznych. W tekście omówiono, czym jest szechita, a następnie, w jaki sposób reguły Tory chronią zwierzęta przed cierpieniem. Ukazuje on również aktualny stan prawny dotyczący uboju rytualnego, przekonania Polaków na ten temat, a także społeczną naukę Kościoła katolickiego dotyczącą rzezi religijnej.

Książka brytyjskiego filozofa polityki i etyka AlasdairaCochrane’a zatytułowana Should Animals HavePoliticalRights? została wydana w roku 2019 w serii PoliticalTheoryToday przez wydawnictwo Polity Press. Jest to pozycja wpisująca się we współczesny nurt teoretyzowania na temat normatywnych aspektów relacji człowieka z innymi zwierzętami, który bywa określany mianem tak zwanego zwrotu politycznego. W recenzji omówiono strukturę książki i prześledzono Cochrane’owską myśl, która ewaluuje – w kontekście postulatu ochrony zwierząt i międzygatunkowej sprawiedliwości – istniejące instytucje, struktury i procesy polityczne, proponując interesujące ich modyfikacje i uzupełnienia.
