The article is an attempt at a gender reading of the motif of undine and melusine in three texts by contemporary Austrian writers: Ingeborg Bachmann (Undine Goes), Barbara Neuwirth (Nimm diese Rosen, Schöne) and Barbara Frischmuth (Otter). In the introduction, the author describes the mythological and literary context in which this motif functions, and then places the analyses of the above mentioned works against this background. Another important issue is the question of the feminist progressiveness of the texts under examination: basing on the assumption that Bachmann’s work is characterised by (pre)feminist thinking, the author places in its context the texts by Neuwirth and Frischmuth, written several decades later.

Götz Aly’s book Europa gegen die Juden 1880–1945 (Europe against the Jews 1880–1945) is a sequel to his earlier published treatise Warum die Deutschen? Warum die Juden? Gleichheit, Neid und Rassenhass (Why the Germans? Why the Jews? Equality, Envy, and Racial Hatred). Both volumes explore the impact of envy on policies of ‘social’ justice and national homogeneity in the interwar period, thereby pointing out the negative aspects of social engineering. As its predecessor, Europa gegen die Juden has been, therefore, criticized by commentators of a more interventionist outlook. One of Aly’s most prominent – and sternest – critics is the historian Hans-Ulrich Wehler. This essay presents a critical assessment of Aly’s argument, the replies of his critics, and Wehler’s views on the market economy, interventionism and ‘social’ justice.

The author presents translations of Wacław Rolicz-Lieder’s poems into German as an example of translating poetry in tandem. With the aid of archival materials, he proves that Rolicz-Lieder is a co-author of translations previously attributed solely to George.

The article presents three fairy tales by Bettina von Arnim: Der Königssohn [The King’s Son], Die blinde Königstochter [The Blind Princess] and Hans ohne Bart [Beardless Hans]. These texts are studied from the point of view of their poetics and their rootedness in the romantic worldview. Moreover, on the example of Der Königssohn fairy tale, an attempt is made at feminist interpretation, while Hans ohne Bart is read using psychoanalytic tools.

This article proposes to view lexicographic comparatistics as a collection of methods which are useful in all areas of dictionary research, i.e. systematic dictionary research, historical dictionary research, critical dictionary research, and research on dictionary use. The main aim, however, is to show a close relationship between lexicographic comparatistics and dictionary criticism. The two of the presented methods which, respectively, consist in studying influences in the field of lexicography and conducting various kinds of comparisons, referring to lexicographic theory as well as praxis, can be productively applied in dictionary criticism. Making a claim that within lexicographic comparatistics it is comparison that is the dominant concept, the author analyses two types of lexicographic comparison – the comparison of dictionaries and the comparison of dictionary reviews – both of which can also function as methods of dictionary criticism.
