This text is an introduction to the monographic issue of the "Chowanna" journal, dedicated to the historical and contemporary perspectives of resocialization. The author refers to the publication "Pedagogika resocjalizacyjna" (Resocialization Pedagogy) from 1971 by Czesław Czapów and Stanisław Jedlewski, a seminal work for Polish resocialization thought, emphasizing its humanistic and realistic approach to the problems of juveniles. The article also recalls Professor Jedlewski and his influence on the formation of the Warsaw academic community dealing with resocialization and social issues in the second half of the 20th century. The aim of this volume is to re-examine the key issues of resocialization in the face of new challenges. The articles presented in the issue address topics such as the role of the Church in resocialization activities, the contemporary understanding of resocialization methodology, the effectiveness of interventions in closed environments, and the subject of volunteering for convicts.

Abstract

The article’s topic is participation of the (Roman Catholic) Church in social prevention schemes, resocialization of juvenile offenders, and in penitentiary work. Selected initiatives by representatives of the (Catholic) clergy, priests, and monastic orders are subject to the analysis, the context for which are resocialization pedagogics, dialogue, and support provided to persons who are in danger of committing a crime. Charity work and improvement of offenders’ behaviour through prisonbased pastoral work is aimed at implementing the principle of mercy. Such notions as conciliation crosses, the riches of mercy, the separate system (of penance), social work amongst the neglected youth environment, and care and education centres (Fr. B. Markiewicz, brother A. Chmielowski, Fr. Honorat Koźmiński, and others) are analysed, along with today’s religious services in penitentiaries and Pope Francis’s calling to aim at sanctity and acknowledging the good in people belonging to our immediate surrounding.

The analyses presented in the article are centred on selected theoretical bases of social rehabilitation methodology developed in Polish research discourse. What was discussed in the work are both: theoretical matricies dominant in classic reflection pertaining to corrective measures to deal with social maladjustment as well as directions in social rehabilitation (or: resocialization) that have gained their popularity over the two recent decades. Moreover, the interdisciplinary position of social rehabilitation activities methodology within Polish tradition was also indicated.

The article deals with social rehabilitation institutions for juveniles in Poland (juvenile detention centres, juvenile shelters, youth education centres). These measures are characterized against a more general backdrop of other responses on the part of justice system, which direct the minor into a non-residential facility. The text presents the latest results of research into the level of reoffending (recidivism) by juveniles leaving the latter facilities. The causes of the poor rehabilitation efficiency therein (reoffending level amounting to circa 50%) is not due to poor rehabilitation offer (for it is indeed rich), but due to the shortcomings of the early intervention and after-care system.

This study’s aim is to indicate the possibilities of utilizing the potential of external environment in the process of rehabilitation of incarcerated individuals based on the example of broadly understood volunteer work in penitentiary practice. The idea should be implemented both in the form of actions originating within the prisons: convicts working for the benefit of society, as well those coming from the outside, namely, the contribution of external organizations into the process of penitentiary interactions in the in‑prison rehabilitation programs. The examples presented in the article mostly concern the penitentiary consisting in the cooperation of the Racibórz Prison with the local community, including the academic volunteering group.

In 1989, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child introduced a radical new principle: that children are entitled to express their views on all matters of concern to them and to have them given due weight. In the interceding 30 years, the global impact of this right, commonly described as participation, has been significant. Across the world, it has stimulated new laws, policies, programmes, projects, tools, and research, as well as a questioning of traditional attitudes towards children. However, there is still a huge journey to be travelled with too many children still denied the right to influence the most basic decisions – in the justice system, in health care, in the family, in education, in relation to getting married. This article explores the progress made and analyses the multiple barriers that still need to be overcome before the right of every child to be listened to in all spheres of life is actually realized. reinstate

The aim of the research was the cognitive a ssessment of a difficult situation in generating aggressive strategy of coping in a social conflict situation by adolescents. In the research the author used the Stress Appraisal Questionnaire (Polish: Kwestionariusz Oceny Stresu – KOS) devised by D. Włodarczyk, K. Wrześniewski and a questionnaire testing the adolescent coping strategies in a social conflict situation (in Polish abbreviated KSMK) developed by D. Borecka-Biernat. The empirical studies were carried out in junior high schools. They involved 893 adolescents (468 girls and 425 boys) aged 13–15. Analysis of the research results has proven that assessing a situation as a threat intensifies the aggression strategy of adolescent coping in a social conflict situation.

The university of today has become one of the many social institutions focused on training well-educated and highly qualified specialists who contribute to developing branches of economy, culture, welfare, and education. Particular field of activity, where various professional competencies are required, is social andeducational work. To develop the said competencies, it seems very important not only to systemically orderthe knowledge coming from different scientific disciplines, but also that professionals conducting practical activities should internalize and structure the knowledge they convey. In general, the article discusses the role of university as a space for training professional competencies and also analyzes the competencies in the field of social and educational work with families and senior citizens.

The text is an overview of the latest research on structural changes occurring in the brain, and resulting from them functional changes in the nervous system. It also indicates the dependencies that occur between the psychophysical development of children and their functioning within the assignment space. For these reasons, the author of the article points to the importance of personalization of education, which would allow for qualitative changes in the child that will result from the learning process adapted to their developmental capabilities. Adaptation is understood here as the teacher’s conscious recognition of the child’s functional individualization and the “tuning” of the education process to the child’s needs and cognitive abilities.

The increase in material wealth in our culture makes it necessary for one to seek for other ways to gauge the quality of life. It becomes especially relevant in the face of issues threatening mental health and human condition itself, such as the number of suicides committed, addictions, depression, and chronic civilization diseases. When we are faced with these phenomena and processes, it results in investigation of factors that could possibly impact the perception and experience of happiness. The article presents research aimed at empirical verification of two models of happiness – hedonism and eudemonism. Hedonism understood as seeking for happiness in intense sensual experiences is equalled with pleasure, whereas eudemonism signifies seeking pleasure through moral development and life based on values. The main assignment given to persons participating in the study involved assessing the happiness of protagonists in each of eight narratives composing the tool devised by the author, namely the Narrative Patterns Questionnaire (Polish Kwestionariusz Schematów Narracyjnych – KSN). Moreover, relationships were sought between KSN scores and the Big Five personality traits (NEO-FFI) as well as the Self-Determination Questionnaire. Empirical indicators of hedonism and eudemonism were developed, which proved to be markedly different from assumptions of the theoretical model. The obtained results indicate among others that the level of happiness is low in persons characterised by high scores on neuroticism scale, and that persons scoring high on extraversion scale estimate their life satisfaction as high.

The article deals with the problems of child’s chronic illness as a difficult situation for the family, which requires support at the local level. The aim is to present and discuss selected problem areas in the social functioning of the family with a chronically ill child and the need to support it at the local level. The text includes issues concerning the scale of occurrence of chronic illnesses in children and adolescents, problems faced by families of children with such conditions, and relevant social support. The forms of assistance that are provided by institutions for families with a child with chronic illness are also presented. The text encourages to reflect on the existing system of support for such families. It is observed that the current support offer is insufficient and limited, which means that not all those in need benefit from it. Consequently, the conclusions are drawn to the need to look for new forms of family support at the local level.

The topic of this research is the development of bilingualism of children of Polish nationality living in the Czech part of Cieszyn Silesia and attending a nursery or elementary school in Karviná where Polish is the language of instruction. The main research question is: How do parents stimulate the development of bilingualism in their children? This main question creates additional partial research questions: Which language or languages do the parents use to talk to their children? What determines the choice of language, when the parents use one language or another or a dialect in everyday communication? What other ways do the parents use to develop bilingualism of their children? What advantage do the parents see in bilingualism? What were the reasons for the parents to choose a bilingual school for their children? Two research methods were used to answer the research questions, namely a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews. Respondents included parents of children who attend a nursery and elementary school in Karviná with Polish as the language of instruction.

This article is a review of the book titled "Social Sciences in the Face of Change – An Alternative of Consolidation (Inspirations for Contemporary Pedagogy)" by Krystyna Marzec-Holka, Andrzej Radziewicz-Winnicki, and Anna Wiłkomirska. In light of the dynamic transformations, uncertainty, and risk that characterize the modern era, the book's authors argue for the urgent need to integrate and overcome the sharp divisions between social science disciplines. The book consists of two parts. The first, prepared by Anna Wiłkomirska, presents a theoretical framework of change in social thought, analyzing, among others, theories of modernization, postmodernism, and social transformations. The second part, from a pedagogical perspective, addresses issues such as social impairment, social capital, communitarianism, social revitalization, and social ecology. The reviewers positively assess the publication, emphasizing its logical structure, courage in tackling complex topics, and practical value. The book is seen as a valuable compendium of knowledge that responds to the need for the consolidation of sciences to diagnose and solve social problems, and it is recommended for academics and practitioners in the fields of education and social policy.

This article reviews the collective work "Good Resocialization Practices in Juvenile Correction and Detention Centers in Poland," edited by Maciej Bernasiewicz and Monika Noszczyk-Bernasiewicz. The publication discusses the educational and therapeutic programs implemented in Polish resocialization institutions for juveniles. The book's content, divided into eight thematic chapters, was developed by pedagogical practitioners. The individual chapters present a wide range of interventions: from cultural techniques and recreation , through animal-assisted therapy and art therapy , programs developing family and pro-social competencies , addiction prevention , to activities ensuring safety within the facilities and preparing residents for independent living. The reviewer emphasizes the publication's high methodological value, pointing to the possibility of widely applying the presented programs in various types of institutions. He also notes the book's educational value for students of resocialization pedagogy, its role in bridging the gap between theory and practice , and its promotion of a positive, fact-based image of resocialization institutions in Poland.
