Syntaxe, sémantique, lexique

Published: 2024-12-31

Volume 36 of Neophilologica explores the complex relationships between syntax, semantics, and the lexicon, bringing together a set of contributions that investigate the functioning of natural languages from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives. Edited by Salah Mejri, Wiesław Banyś and Beata Śmigielska, this issue adopts an integrative approach to linguistic analysis, focusing both on the internal structure of language systems and on their realization in discourse.

The contributions share the view that language is a dynamic system involving multiple levels of organization—from phonemes and morphemes to texts—and that the lexicon constitutes a central point of convergence where linguistic form, semantic content, and combinatory potential interact.

The articles in this issue can be grouped around several major thematic areas reflecting current research directions in linguistics.

A first group of contributions addresses polylexicality, fixed expressions, and conceptualization. In Polylexicality in Chinese: a double phonic and scriptural perspective, Lichao Zhu analyzes the structural specificities of Chinese characters and the linguistic organization they reveal. In a comparative perspective, Jingyao Wu, in The crystallization of conceptualization modes in proverbs, examines metaphorical conceptualization in Chinese, French and Spanish proverbs, highlighting the interplay between linguistic structures and cultural representations. The dynamic nature of fixed expressions is further explored by Thouraya Ben Amor in The share of the modalization in the defrosting, which investigates the role of modalization in the discursive reshaping of frozen sequences.

A second thematic axis concerns denomination and lexical dynamics. Grair Magakian, in Artificial intelligence in (French) terminology – its “humanizing” properties, analyzes the emergence and circulation of AI-related vocabulary between specialized discourse and general language. The cultural dimension of naming is explored by Mieczysław Gajos in Proper names in the songtexts of Edith Piaf, which highlights the linguistic, stylistic, and symbolic roles of proper names in the singer’s repertoire.

Several articles examine general grammatical and semantic categories. In Anti-exhaustivity as a linguistic function, Antonio Pamies proposes a cross-linguistic analysis of this semantic category and the grammatical strategies used to express subset selection within larger sets. The interaction between modality and discourse organization is further explored by Leila Hosni in Modalization and anaphora: a complex predicative relationship.

Textual and discourse structure constitutes another important focus of the issue. Hanna Połomska, in Repetitions as Stylistic Features in Translation: A Comparative Polish – Spanish – French Analysis, investigates the stylistic and discursive functions of repetition in literary translation, while Anissa Zrigue, in The role of units of the third articulation of language in the context of NLP, examines the relationship between linguistic structures and neurolinguistic programming.

Finally, several contributions adopt comparative and intersemiotic perspectives. Aleksandra Paliczuk, in The role of prepositions in perceiving the world. Cognitive analysis of the comparison of some cases in Italian and Polish, analyzes how prepositions contribute to the conceptualization of experience across languages. Ilona Cieślar-Śliż, in A contrastive analysis of prefixed forms of the Polish verb pisać and their Spanish equivalents, explores semantic and aspectual correspondences between Polish and Spanish verbal systems. In Translating the image, translating the mimicry, describing emotions: joy, Katarzyna Gabrysiak and Alicja Hajok examine intersemiotic translation through the audiodescription of the series Lupin.

Through the diversity of its topics, languages, and analytical approaches, this volume of Neophilologica highlights the vitality of contemporary linguistic research and underscores the importance of integrative perspectives capable of linking detailed empirical analysis with broader theoretical models of language structure and use.
