Taking into account the category of colloquiality allows to state the ways of recognizing health in the social consciousness in terms of its nature, indicators and conditions, which are formed in the process of lifelong socialization of health. This is important for designing goals of health education because the subjective concepts of health participate in shaping the motivation to undertake health-related activities. The analysis of the content of colloquial concepts of health indicates an important role of the message which is contained in the media space. The social discourse on health is accompanied by positive and negative indicators of health-related lifestyle of society. This shows the need to raise the level of health literacy using the potential of the mass media.

Leisure time is an important sphere in human life. The lack of duty, and the awareness of the possibility to spend time on activities that are important from the point of view of the individual, has a significant impact on the development and health of people of all ages, especially including adolescents. The aim of this study has been to assess the quantity and the quality of leisure time available to adolescents at the threshold of adulthood, as well as to specify how people who have a hobby assess different areas of their health. The study has been conducted on 330 subjects aged 18–19 (160 boys and 170 girls). The survey method has been used, applying the CAWI technique, and anonymous self-filled questionnaires have been employed as a research tool. The results indicate that a significant number of adolescents have some leisure time during the school week. The most important thing for them is to be able to rest, have contact with others, and be able to pursue their hobby at that time. Most of the respondents have assessed that hobby has positive effect on their mental health.

Nowadays, more and more frequently the importance of personal choices is emphasized with regard to health condition and the risk of developing certain illnesses. This means that it is necessary to implement educational and preventive strategies. The starting point for such activities should constitute a diagnosis of health behaviours of various groups of people, based on reliable research tools. Our research has been carried out on a group of 345 randomly selected inhabitants of the Silesian Voivodeship. The Inventory of Health Behaviours of Z. Juczyński has been used. The results obtained have been compared with normalization results in the field of descriptive statistics. Positional statistics and correlation coefficients have also been analyzed. Taking into account the data obtained, practical recommendations have been made in terms of planning and implementing educational strategies among the inhabitants of the Silesian Voivodeship.

The aim of the study is to demonstrate the significance of information and communication technologies for the health and development of young children. A meta-analysis of the phenomenon has been carried out on the basis of the literature on the subject and statistical data. Attempts have been made to highlight the consequences – both positive and negative – of the participation of digital technology in the process of upbringing, because there is no doubt that today’s children are born and grow up in a world dominated by new technology, which means that most of their first childhood experiences have a visual and media character. Statistics confirm the fact that the youngest children devote more and more time to new media, and the age of the children who use new media has fallen. However, the abuse of mobile digital media and the Internet by the youngest is associated with many threats and potential problems in the area of health and psycho-social functioning. Due to the fact that, most commonly, it is parents that are children’s first teachers, they should introduce their children to the world of media with attention to “maintaining a balance between technical and cultural aspect of their development”, both perceiving the positive sides of media and its use by the child, as well as being aware of and informed about potential threats (J. Morbitzer). Frequently, indispensable in this process is the pedagogization of parents and media education, which through the transfer of knowledge, shaping skills and attitudes allows to create rational, responsible and safe models of functioning in the world of media.

In the scientific literature, mental health is often defined in terms of individual well-being. It is emphasized that in order to achieve it, it is necessary to possess certain resources that constitute a kind of health potential. The richer the resources, the better an individual overcomes current challenges and copes with difficult experiences. This article presents the results of research aimed at determining the perception and assessment of resources possessed by individuals using psychological assistance. A qualitative strategy has been used in the research and the collective case study method has been applied. On the basis of the research conducted, conclusions referring to mental health promotion have been formulated, with the emphasis on the educational aspects of potential promoting actions.

Cancer is currently regarded as a chronic disease, leading to disability at the level of biology, psychological functions and fulfilling social roles. In the consciousness of society, sick, suffering and dying people are perceived as Others/Strangers. The aim of the presented research is the recognition of social meanings attributed to the photographic narration of a person suffering from cancer about his/her own disease. The research was carried out in 2016 in Gdańsk and Toruń. Utterances of 82 exhibition’s recipients were analyzed. The research shows that this type of narration favours the transformation of the sick person from the Stranger to the Other – the majority of people tried to interpret the situation of a sick person from the perspective of an emphatic person, to enter into emotional contact with the author of the narration, and ask themselves about the meaning and value of their own existence.

Physical recovery of the addicted person is a multidimensional, complex and long-term process. There are many difficulties and challenges which accompany its course. Hence, the question arises what to do to prevent a relapse of the illness, what should be done for the healing process to develop in a good way and produce expected results. Finding the factors which foster long-term abstinence is of great importance, because it provides opportunities to increase the effectiveness of the granted aid. In response to cognitive needs, efforts have been made in the article, on the basis of own study, to provide information on the factors which may be especially helpful while coming out of addiction.

Research in the field of social pedagogy should cover comprehensive issues taking a multidisciplinary perspective. It is especially important for an interdisciplinary approach to problem identification, exploration and solving where practical aspects have become socially significant. Therefore, the research in diagnosing the residents of Tychy with certain health problems, focusing on the incidence of cervical carcinoma and related mortality, was supplemented with the residents’ views on the municipal preventive program and was carried out in line with the current socio-educational tasks in relation to people (provision of normal human development), environment (which defines human development and the functioning of communities), values (which condition the processes of transformation of man and his habitat), and social actions (which lead to modifications and improvements in human environment). The research was carried out as a part of another research and education project, entitled Prevention of Cervical Carcinoma, or How it is Done in Tychy. An Analysis of Knowledge Sources and the Views on HPV Vaccines, which was funded with a grant by the Polish Cancer League Foundation. The research results presented here make just a part of the project carried out between January and June 2017. The conclusions presented may contribute to practical efforts in increasing the potential for health in local communities.

Alcohol – as an ingredient in food products, especially beverages – in its social presence through historical time, formed a few identifying cultural meanings, placing itself in the pantheon of priced values, established and socially cherished ludic patterns, the hallmarks of experiencing satisfying lifestyles and practicing effective therapy. Together with it, it revealed and consolidated, in its individual and social experience, its second, destructive face, liberating a cascade of states currently classified collectively as a social problem. The authors of the article, in the first part, review the basic assumptions and theoretical findings devoted to the essence and sources of social problems; in the second part, they identify the social alcohol problem in its four manifestations: uncontrolled production of alcoholic beverages, their elusive distribution control, carefree and uncontrolled alcohol consumption and in individual and social consequences of its immoderate consumption, emphasizing the effects it has caused in the economic, criminal, vital, demographic and socio-pedagogical, especially family-related, spheres.

The aim of this article is to discuss the issue of the politics of resistance based on the example of current social, political, and cultural changes after the conservative party took over power in Poland. The example of Poland reflects the situation in many other countries where parties holding traditional, conservative, and nationalistic views are gaining more and more public support. In the context of these changes, the significance of political resistance emerges; on the one hand, it is within the limits set by the dominant power structures but, on the other hand, it extends beyond them, revealing the existence of other possible realities. In this case, opposition acts lead to the formation and strengthening of social antagonisms, which shows their political character. On this basis, we can distinguish resistance of the ruling party, resistance of the opposition parties, and resistance resulting from social opposition which can take two forms: resistance towards government activities and resistance towards anti-government activities.

The aim of the issue undertaken has been to show the complexity of the process in which a child learns the world. School education is an element of this process, but what happens in extracurricular space, especially within the family environment, is an extremely important background for the school system – the teaching process. This research process brings an overview of selected aspects of the functioning of the child in the family, which significantly affect the overall experience of building the knowledge of the world. An attempt has been made to find out what behaviours and attitudes that makeup the multi-faceted parenting process dominate in their families, according to the parents surveyed Another issue raised in the study is the use of reinforcements. In this part of the study, the views of both parents and their children have been examined. The research has been conducted on 279 parents and 279 children (558 in total). A diagnostic survey has been carried out among parents, and interviews have been conducted among children.

Abstract

The starting point for the considerations taken up in this article is a general interest in the so-called material turn in social science and its consequences for historiography of educational thought. Despite the fact that material turn is not a new concept in (post)humanities, it is nevertheless still worth considering, due to controversies underlying its basics. It should be noticed that material turn evokes the necessity of shifting research interests from human to thing (from subject to object), which in educational context becomes a crucial change of the main field of study. The first part of the article is an attempt to employ a theoretical background posed especially by Ewa Domańska, Martin Heidegger, and Bjørnar Olsen. The final part of the study touches upon a few literary and philosophical contexts in an attempt to widen the historical imagination of educational thought with material turn.
