The article contains analyses of the several press publications that appeared in Polish tabloids after Anna Przybylska’s death in 2014. The analysed material proves that a death of a celebrity holds an importance for media mainly because of her/his previous presence in media and not because of the consolation function of a text itself. Such texts are deeply rooted in a tradition of funeral literature, yet they serve completely different purpose.

The article aims at analysing selected legal acts concerning language policy issued by Joseph II for Galicia in the period of time between 1780 and 1790. The consequences of these acts are also described. For the Austrian authorities, Galicia – as a multilingual and multicultural region – was a challenge because there had not been any strong state authority or bureaucratic structure there even before Galicia became a part of the Habsburg monarchy. One of the biggest problems for the local officials was a very limited knowledge of the German language amongst the inhabitants of the region, therefore a number of legal actions had to be initiated to enforce the local people’s learning of the official language of the Habsburg monarchy, and yet, at the same time the languages of minorities were recognized.

The article discusses a concept of Central Europe and its research implications, as seen within their importance to the Slavonic Studies in Brno. An essential element of any discussion about Central Europe (thus East and West) is a cultural dialogue. The author of the article understands such a dialogue as not only a gentle coexistence and peaceful supplementation but also – a creative confrontation of the participating parties. Under deliberations are also: a problem of evaluating some cultures against others, terms that reveal the offputting attitudes and stereotypes used by some researchers when cultures and literatures of Central Europe are written about. The author analyses the tradition of “CentralEuropeanness” and places it within a wide cultural context. The question about a future of this concept as well as the status of homo Europae centralis is also posited.

Two ballet performances are being analysed: Pietruszka by Igor Strawiński and Dama Kameliowa choreographed by John Neumier. The author discusses a metatheatrical character of the two performances, which reveals itself through a concept of “a theatre within a theatre”. The analyses presented in this article are rooted in a (slightly modified) methodological approach defined by Marcin Gmys. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the three subcodes (dance, music and drama) determine the functionality of the concept of ‘a theatre within a theatre’ in both performances.

The aim of the article is to respond to the question whether the subject of the story can exclude a homoerotic passion that he is possessed by. Jerzy Andrzejewski’s short story Niby gaj is used here to prove that a mechanism of selfexclusion is an illusion and it turns into its own reverse. The mechanism of exclusion helps the hero of the story to create a web made of attachments and dependencies. Michał (the adored object) embodies such a set of connections and acts as a lover who in this case turns against his antagonist.

The aim of this work is to interpret – by means of the postcolonial strategy of reading – a short story titled Mimesis, published in Paweł Huelle’s collection: Opowieści chłodnego morza. This kind of interpretation reveals a choice of new perspectives, aiming at the healing of trauma by explaining the symptoms and revealing hidden facts. In Mimesis by Huelle, this happens due to the character’s narration. The author of the article presents a process of the characters identity creation during their encounters with different cultures (Huelle exemplifies a multicultural mosaic in his short story). All the way through the imagery of the characters, the author of the article enhances the main axiological features and describes the process of identity creation, thus an act of liberating oneself from restrictions of one’s own culture.

The article presents Bruno Schulz’s and Heinrich Kleist considerations on matter. A comparative approach enables a new interpretation of Traktat o manekinach by Schulz and of some selected works by Kleist. The author ponders about the role of elpis, around which the human world is created. The Greek word: elpis, contains a whole parable about a hope which has stood up to nonexistence, darkness, a lack of form. A human being turns out to be forced to create, knead matter, because his life depends on it. By shaping things he gives reality to his own world that may disappear at any time. Both reflected upon authors, Schulz and Kleist, choose two different paths to contact with matter and they inscribe it – together with a human being – into a philosophical thought that goes far beyond simple the “living” – “lifeless” opposition.
