Miljenko Jergović in and about Poland — Notes in the Margin while Discussing Wilimowski the Novel

The article gives a brief summary of Miljenko Jergović’s literary presence in Poland. It concentrates upon the writer’s poems, short stories, novels and essays hitherto translated into Polish and published in Poland. Additionally, Jergović’s manifold connections with Poland are presented, starting with the history of his cooperation with Magdalena Petryńska, who translated all of his novels into Polish. This translator’s impact on the writer’s popularity in our country is underscored. Within this scope, the article concentrates on the Jergović’s “most Polish” work, a short novel entitled Wilimowski. Thanks to Petryńska’s efforts, the book was published in Polish in April 2016, which constituted the novel’s world premiere. The article concisely addresses and describes the circumstances of Wilimowski’s several editions, concurrently discussing motives behind the writer’s interest in Poland (among others, the novel’s protagonist — a Polish football player Ernest Wilimowski), and the book’s reception in Poland. Last but not least, Jergović’s writing technique is characterized along with leitmotifs of his literary works.

Text and Paratext: The Reception of Witold Gombrowicz in Croatia

From the year 2000 onwards, the number of works by Witold Gombrowicz translated into Croatian has decisively increased. The above is followed by a plethora of critical articles: features, commentaries, reviews, academic research articles, etc. The present article focuses on the issue of correspondence between the literary text and its paratext(s) in the target language culture, their potential interdependence, and their consequent impact on the reception of Gombrowicz’s work and the writer’s image. The analysis considers the factors contributing to Gombrowicz’s growing presence in Croatian cultural discourse.

Commentary on Translations of Polish Literature in Macedonian Language Published in 2016

This text analyzes the motivation behind choosing particular books in a given period, with a special emphasis on the literary reportage, which has broken into the collective consciousness of Macedonian reading audience and now slowly gains popularity. The article also provides information on the current situation of literary translators and the publishing houses’ modes of operation What is also described here are the main determinants of literary translation, which vary in individual cases.

Slovak Contemporary Literature in the Polish Horizon of Reception in the Year 2016

The author of the paper characterizes Slovak literature translated into Polish in 2016. She analyzes in detail the translations of Slovak prose Piata loď by Monika Kompaníkova (in the Polish version Piąta łódź), Informácia by Maroš Krajňák (Informacja) and Zu by Silvster Lavrík (Zu). She also interprets Polish translations of Slovak prose in anthologies Portrety z bliska and Tu i teraz, which include the prose of Radovan Brenkus, Ľudovít Petraško, Peter Karpinský, Martin Vlado and women writers from the associations Aspekt and Femina, among others, Mária Bátorová, Jana Bodnárová, Etela Farkašová, Jana Juráňová, Helena Dvořáková, Rúth Lichnerová, Eva Maliti Fraňová. The author of the paper is interested in reception of Slovak contemporary literature in the secondary horizon.

On Slovak Translations of Wisława Szymborska’s Poems

This paper deals with the Slovak translations of poems by Wisława Szymborska who was awarded Nobel Prize in 1996. Twenty years later two collection of her poems were published in the Slovak language. The author of this paper summarized all translations of W. Szymborska’s poems into the Slovak language which have been published in literature magazines as well as books since 1952, the year of the poet’s debut. Since some poems were translated more than once by different translators, the phenomenon of retranslation is also discussed. Various translations of three poems are compared and analyzed in the paper as well.
